Overheating HELP!!!
Overheating HELP!!!
Hi,
I have a 1985 trans am and i have a questions,
the car has a chevy 350 motor (i dont know were the motor came out of) its carbed and has some mods it has,
Flat head pistons
street cam
edlebrock intake,4 barell carb,headers
and an electric fan
Over the winter we started the car and forgot to turn on the fan so it overheated we tried to shut off the car but it wouldnt so we stalled it out in 2nd...
sience that day the car is getting up to 230 dagrees f
we have replaced the thermostat, radiator, and the water pump (new one)
today we let it idle for about 1hr and it hit 230
we checked the oil and i see no grey and there is no antifreeze coming from the exhaust so i dont think its the heads but
plzzzzzzzz
Thanks

Is the fan coming on at all? Also if the sender for the temp gauge is not compatible ( not the same year as the gauge/cluster) it could be way off

Re: Overheating HELP!!!
it wouldn't shut off? ^^
as stated, fan info necessary to troubleshoot this any further.
you say it has an edelbrock intake, dunno if you use it but if it does have a Coolant Temperature Sender you can also read it out with an ohmmeter instead of relying on the temperature gauge (though the CTS might also be shot LOL).

Re: Overheating HELP!!!
230 is not overheating. Unless the coolant is boiling over, it's not overheating. These gauges are not very accurate at all.
As asked, is the fan running?

i dont have a censor, the only thing i have is a copper cupler going into the block that's hooked up to a gauge inside the car (sunpro)
the car will shut off it disealing a little then it shut off
Thanks for your reply

I wouldn't believe either. Stop in a a local shop and ask a mechanic to shoot it with infared temp gun and see what it really is.
If the car is dieseling, need to check timing.

Re: Overheating HELP!!!
If your timing is off, it could cause it to run a little hot. Just for a figure of reference, I have a jet fan switch that turns my fan on at 195*, my temp gauge when it turns on is just past the 220* mark on the temp gauge in the car. So your gauge could be off by quite a bit. So long as the car still runs fine and isn't boiling over, there is no water in the oil or vice versa, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
