Removing the AC

I dont need the A/C just getting in the way. would it be ok to take everything off but the compressor (need it to keep the belt on) and just cover the hole on the firewall with some sheet metal?
What exactly would i have to do as far as the sensors are concerned just cut them out?

Re: Removing the AC

You can remove the compressor as well - just use a delete pulley in it's place, like $30 at most auto parts stores.

Re: Removing the AC

IS there a shorter belt that would work? Did cars come without AC standard?

Re: Removing the AC

You should be able to use a shorter belt and just remove the A/C compressor - but you have to route the belt differently. If you look at the article about removing the smog pump, and look at the diags there, you can see how the belt gets rerouted for smog pump removal, and can reroute a new different belt accordingly to remove the A/C instead. But you'd need a longer belt, not a shorter one, because of the rerouting - size not known, you'll have to get a piece of string and measure the new routing around the pulleys then go get that size belt.

BUT NOTE: You CANNOT remove both the A/C AND the smog pump WITHOUT having a delete pulley for one or the other. The serp sys cars have a reverse rotation waterpump, and there's no way to reroute the belt without one or the other (smog pump or A/C) having a delete pulley.

Here's the smog pump removal article: www.thirdgen.org/serpentine

Re: Removing the AC

Do yo have a part number or precise description for the delete pulley? You never know if the person behind the counter will know what you're talking about.

Re: Removing the AC

you can only delete the smog or the a/c without adding a delete pulley, otherwise the water pump will spin the wrong way. but you can send me all the a/c stuff so I can put it in my car

Re: Removing the AC

Both the 305 and 350 can use dorman A/C bypass pulley part number #34157. The part number should cross easily to other brands as well depending on what your local store caries. Prices range from $30 - $50.

Re: Removing the AC

Does this same part (34157) fit the '91 3.1? And does it attach to the existing bracket that holds the a/c compressor or is a different bracket needed?

Re: Removing the AC

Everywhere I look it states for a V8, not V6. I don't know if brackets are different or not. I'd personally grab one from NAPA (they make same part different brand, usually in stock), or special order that Dorman part number from advance or autozone - and that way it's returnable without shipping expense if it doesn't work.

*edit* Or call Dorman directly at 1-800-523-2492 and ask.

Re: Removing the AC

I looked on Rockauto and they list a belt for a V6 car w/o a/c for under $30. The length listed is correct (string measure) and the only difference in routing is the belt goes straight across from the tensioner to the power steering pulley. The only thing that I'm suspicious off is the gap between the belt sitting on top of the water pump pulley and the belt going in the opposite direction between the tensioner and the steering pump pulley. This seems a little cheaper than the delete pulley and gets rid of some clutter. ????

Re: Removing the AC

Well, alot of folks worry about the new longer distance between pulleys when removing the smog pump system as well, yet none of the folks that ever did it without the delete pulley never had any issues (including myself), so I wouldn't worry about the extra space between pulleys by removing the A/C.

Sounds like you have a solution - try it - nothing to lose but an hour and the price of a different belt!

True. But priority wise I need to get it running first!

Re: Removing the AC

Belts are easy - the part number for the belt is just made up of numbers relating to the length and the number of ribs (at most places) - so a 945x6 is a 94.5 inch belt with 6 ribs. So, if you know the length you need, and of course you know the number of ribs, then any local parts store will have the belt you need.

Like this one - look at the part number ... 5060945 ... that's a 94.5 inch belt with 6 ribs:

Re: Removing the AC

GM part #10044867 Should be the appropriate ac delete pulley for the 3.1, For Some reason the more common after market manufacturers never reproduced it. As for part stores that carry dorman, some keep dorman in stock but its not likely to find much of anything for any vehicle thats close to or older than 20 years old. Theres not a huge market for them. Most part stores can order them from their warehouse overnight, or some even the same day. On another note Camaronewbie is correct on belt sizing and their part numbers.

Re: Removing the AC

Hadn't noticed the correlation between ribs/length and part numbers. The ones listed for 3.1 w/o a/c are all ...60905 which is 6 ribs and 90.5 inches. Exactly what I measured.
Good to know.

Re: Removing the AC

OK I cut/shut an old belt and tried it on for clearance set to the listed 90.5 inches and 90 inches. The 90.5 left almost no clearance above the water pump pulley. The 90 inch belt left about 3/4 inch giving some room for stretch. So, for a 91 3.1, to get rid of the a/c and not have the extra pulley left in place, the 90 inch belt is the one. eg Goodyear 4060900. $20.79 on RockAuto.

Re: Removing the AC

My 86 Trans Am has the 305 TPI. It is not a serp belt system. Can I get direction on removing my smog pump. My AC compressor is already gone. On this engine, there are two belts powering my power steering. When i removed the AC, it brought it down to one. I do not see problems with this. Any insight from anyone who has been there done that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
