Re: Help fan wont go on replace the sensor

It sounds like we both have a problem with the switch. Im trying to keep the car as original as possible and the idea of a fan controller doesn't sound like the best idea (for me). I just bought a 195 degree thermostat today..maybe that was a bad idea.

I have a 195 and the hottest my car gets is 207*F. Today was almost 90* too

OP Have you actually confirmed that your temperature is getting high enough to warrant the fan switch closing the circuit? Factory gauge is not good enough to confirm this.

Re: Help fan wont go on replace the sensor

I also have an 88 rs 305 TBI. i just replaced the fan switch and themostat as well. my fan is not coming on either. when I start the car it runs normal. then the gauge slowly after a few miles of driving, starts to heat up. I am not hearing the fan kick on at 220 or 238. I have noticed that when the gauge gets to the red and I turn the car off for a min or two that when I restart the car fan functions normal with no problems for the rest of my trip. Also a side note. the temp goes from well into the red down to 220 in a matter of seconds once I restart the car... any ides or suggestions would be helpful. Radiator/water pump less than a year old. fan switch and thermostat are brand new

I have also tried turning the A/C on at about 220 just to see if that would cool it off enough. It didnt seem to make any difference and still gauge went into the red. I have had the car for 8 years and never any issues like this.

Does the fan kick on when you turn the A/C on? Because it should.

Again. Don't confuse that wavy thing in the dash as a 'guage' of the actual temperature.

Number 2: It's not overheating unless it's boiling over.

Next time you pull into the driveway at the house with it warmed up try opening the hood to see when the fan comes on. Let it idle there for several minutes. OBSERVE whether the fan comes on, then cycles off after a bit and whether or not any coolant boils over into the overflow container. Have a beer or two while you watch.

You're NOT going to hear the fan come on while driving, especially with that crazy music playing.

One explanation that has not been mentioned is air in the cooling system. The temp switch will not read air. Either the air is trapped in the system or compression (combustion gas) is getting in the coolant.

Mine started working again 2 days ago. I think my temp. gauge is just innacurate by like 20 degrees.

We just fixed our fan issue. The relay was not latching properly or the contacts were worn out. New relay fixed it. Also, I took the connector apart and pulled the pin out to check drag it needed to be adjusted or replaced to restore the proper drag.

Just providing more ideas that may be helpful to you guys.
