1987 Camaro IROC cooling question?

Sorry I am sure this question has been beat to death. Well anyways I have a 1987 camaro Iroc with 5.7ltr tpi motor and is all stock. I want to put an aftermarket fan switch from hypertech 4028. My camaro has the dual fan set-up with one fan switch is located on the top right of the motor with 2 pins and the other is the switch/sender which located on the left side of the engine between the two front cylinders and is connected with a spade connector. Will the Hypertech or jet aftermarket actually work on my 1987 camaro? I have put in a jet one and run the motor and the temperature gauge will not work and the fans will not come on but if I put the stock sender/switch in the temp. gauge works correctly and the fans come on at factory settings. So will the hypertech or jet switchs work as senders too or just switchs? I just want the fan to come on a 185 and stop at 200. Any help would be great.

Re: 1987 Camaro IROC cooling question?

The unit on top of the intake by the thermostat housing is NOT a switch - it is a sender. There is only one available (well, mant different brands I'm sure, but no difference between them). IT tells the computer what the coolant temp is, and the computer turns on the primary fan accordingly. The ONLY way to get the primary fan to come on at a lower temp is to reprogram a chip for the computer.

The unit on the pass side head, between #6 & #8 spark plugs, is the fan switch itself. It turns on ONLY the secondary fan. This switch can be replaced with several different available options for different temp settings - but again this only controls the secondary fan. Search "fan switch alternatives" and you'll find a thread with different part numbers for different temp switches.

Now - after having said all that, my opinion ...
if your willing to spend $100, forget the stupid GM designed fan switches and computer-controlled fan junk, and buy an aftermarket controller for the fans - that way you can adjust them at whatever temp you like, anytime you like, without getting another face full of coolant screwing around with that stupid GM designed junk. These controllers probe the radiator fins (no coolant leaks in the face), and have provisions for manual on/off switches, A/C, are fully adjustable, and even start the fans at 65% power draw to not tax the electrical system.

After going through 4-5 different brands of those stupid in-head switches (including expensive ones) only to have them crap out on me in 30 days, I went with a $100 Flex-a-lite controller - and it's the best $100 I ever spent. 4+ years later, I've never once had any cooling issues at all - the unit works great ALL the time. You couldn't pay me enough money to ever consider using another in-head fan switch setup wit hall the stupid relays and junk when these seperate switches are available with solid-state technology that never fails.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

It's an easy install - they come with everything needed (thus I recommend the Flex-a-lite brand). Just look at them at summitracing.com - there are several different ones, different options denote different prices - the one I run I think now sells for a little over $100 - but it's almost identical to the $89 summit carries.
