Still have the heater diverter valve connected inline on the heater hoses?

check the routing of the hoses and the vacuum line. Hot water should not enter until you slide the temp gauge

Try a search. I know I've seen this issue discussed before.

Re: why is heat coming from ducts?

I don't believe all models came with a water valve. I don't have one (car has no a/c) and the heater core is always hot. I get warm air from the ducts because the flaps no longer seal properly. After many years the foam rubber turns to dust.

Re: why is heat coming from ducts?

Also, blower picks up fresh air from the cowl (screens under wipers). You will draw some engine bay heat. Be it bad hood gasket or, simply radiant heat from firewall.

Engine running, hvac selector off, vacuum draws the divert to the floor vents default.
Lose vacuum, divert closes default to defrost vents.

I got a 86 Camaro Shop Manual that covers the HVAC from top to bottom. It contains pictures of the ducts and much more too.

You are correct. My 86 IROC does not have that diverter that is controled by a vacuum line. So hot coolant always flows through my heater core. I too have hot air pouring out of the floor vents. Its because the cowl vent allows air to enter the car which unfortunately blows passed the heater core, thus heating up the incoming air.

If your car was originally A/C equipped, there should be a divert valve (even my '71 would have one if it were an A/C equipped car).
Regardless, the hot/cold door blocks hot air from passing the heater core unless, as OLD stated, the seal is gone. The divert valve is only closed on the full cold setting anyways.

Mine was equipt with A/C. But somewhere between the 7 PO's, everything that involves the A/C (including the heater core) was taken out. Bummer.

909 in the house!!! Yeah man. I just got my 86 shop manual and it is a bible compared to the Haynes and Chelton books. I left Rialto back in 2006. So much has changed to Power 106. Tattoo is gone, Stacey Stace, and Jeff Garcia gaone too. Also, what happened to Tito in the late afternoon?

Tattoo and Stacey Stace are 2 of Power 106's radio show hosts. They are no longer there. As for Holtville, remember the 7.2 Easter Earthquake last year (I'm sure you felt it), well I'm from that area, just north of Mexicali, Mexico.

Re: why is heat coming from ducts?

Yup. Way down south. Im about 5 minutes north of the mexican border. But to stay on topic, the average summer temp here in my home town doesnt help at all with the heat coming through my vents. The average summer temp here (southern tip of the Mojave Desert) is around 110*. So of course the air coming through my lower vents is extremely hot. But in the winter, the heat keeps my feet nice and cozy.

Re: why is heat coming from ducts?

What you should do is just short-circuit the heater hose and leave the heater core out of the circuit. You can put it back if it ever gets cold in the winter.
