how to use old relay

so I need to hook up my fan at least to a relay and toggle switch for now untill I can get a fan switch. I just wanted to use an old relay such as fan or fuel pump. How do you know which wires go to which terminal on relay. When you by one from store it tells you 30 goes here and 87 goes here. But old one doesn't have nimbers
