Fan Shroud

Hi,

Am trying to find a fan shroud for an 82 Firebird both upper and lower. Tought it be an easy find but am having difficulty finding one. Tried ebay but nothing there.

Was it the same fan shoud that was used for 82 -92 or were there differences. I know that the 82 had a belt driven fan and that at some point they switched to an electric fan (don't know what year this happened). I don't know if the fan shroud would have changed also.

Anyone help,
Thanks.

Re: Fan Shroud

There are at least 3 fan set ups that I have dealt with. A mechanical belt driven clutch fan. For the most part carburated vehicles. A single electric and a dual electric fan set up. All the shrouds are different.

Re: Fan Shroud

I have a belt driven clutch fan. When was the electric fan interduced. I wonder will any of the fan shroud for a single electric fan work with the belt driven fan.

Re: Fan Shroud

No, there's not really much of a shroud on the electric ones. It's mostly just brackets to hold the fans

Re: Fan Shroud

The electric fan shrouds are completely different than the manual fan. The manual shroud funnels air, while the electrics are more of a support for the fans.

Re: Fan Shroud

Okay Thanks.

Any idea when the electric fan was interduced. I know 82 had the belt driven fan but not sure if 83 or later had them.

Re: Fan Shroud

The electric fans were available on all carbed L69s (VIN G) and 87 carbed LG4 (VIN H). You want the shroud from an 82-86 LG4.

Re: Fan Shroud

They are 2 pieces. Significantly larger than the electric set up.

Re: Fan Shroud

There were also different mechanical fan shrouds to fit different mechanical fans used, too.

Re: Fan Shroud

I'd advise converting to an electric set up, unless you're set on keeping it original.

Re: Fan Shroud

I have been looking for a fan shroud for the early V6 Firebirds. I can find the upper part which is available from classic industries for under $40. The bottom part has been discontinued. Found a place in Canada called Davidt's who want $220 for it, Crazy!

Was wondering was this fan Shroud used on any other GM vehicle. When I do searches for a shroud for a 2.8L V6 I get sites selling shrouds for a GMC Jimmy 2.8, V6. It is hard to know from the images wether it will fit or not. Don't know what a Jimmy looks like or the years of manufacture.

Re: Fan Shroud

Shrouds are application specific.

Re: Fan Shroud

And also I find out that the V6 ones are different than the V8. I had just found a fan shroud for a V8 and was feeling good and then to find out it is not right, what a bummer!
