Water temp gauge stuck straight up.

My water temp gauge seems to be stuck straight up all the time, key off, on, or engine running. Found similar posts, but not quite the same problem. Lifting sender wire at sender has no efffect, power to gauge, other gauges work. Car is not overheating, 89 IROC. Any ideas fellas?

Re: Water temp gauge stuck straight up.

Have you unplugged the wire from the sending unit to see if that makes the gauge drop? if so then your sending unit is stuck in a permanent ground and needs to be replaced. Those gauges work off of resistance to ground and a pegged coolant gauge means somewhere that sensor wire is getting a full ground.

Yes I have lifted the wire off the sender, no change. And deadbird, the link displayed 'no matches'

Re: Water temp gauge stuck straight up.

Perhaps your gauge got pegged once and the needle got stuck. Remove your bezel and gently move the needle with your fingers.

Re: Water temp gauge stuck straight up.

Same thing happen on mine - when you pull the bezel apart you'll see the needle slid over the edge of the gauge getting stuck. Just use a pair of small duckbull pliers and bend a little ledge/stop into the edge of your gauge for the needle to stop and come back around. Easy fix - wish they could all be this easy.

Re: Water temp gauge stuck straight up.

Ended up taking out the water temp gauge to do this. I used a cloth so It didnt damage the bezel but still ended up making some scuffs so I just black taped it and you cant even tell.
