Engine overheating!!!

I seem to be having a problem with overheating in my 92 Z28. It has a tendency in stop and go traffic to easily break the 220 mark. the fans work and the water pump pumps but it still stays way up in temperature. I noticed that when at idle after the engine gets warm from about 10 minutes of driving the oil pressure goes to 0. Ive changed the oil and used a thicker oil. But, here is the kicker if i sit in the traffic and rev the engine a bit to build up oil pressure the engine temperature goes down. What could make the oil pressure go down after it gets warm?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Engine overheating!!!

could be the oil pump is just getting weak, is it the stock pump? are you running multi weight oil?

Re: Engine overheating!!!

You might want to change your oil pressure sensor, I have seen them start to go bad by loosing sensitivity to low pressure.

Re: Engine overheating!!!

Hot oil is thinner than cold. It squirts out of your worn bearings more easily than when cold, dropping the pressure.

Revving the engine up a little in traffic speeds up the water pump, and cools better.

Re: Engine overheating!!!

If it is reading 0 psi yet still running just fine, check the oil pressure sensor. Sounds like yours went out.

Warmer oil is thinner than cold oil & produses a lower oil pressure, but not down to zero.

Ok I understand this part now. What are my choices to fix this without rebuilding the entire engine? I already have 10w40 in it now

Re: Engine overheating!!!

Replace the oil pressure sender, it's down right above the oil filter sticking straight out sideways, probably, but check the pressure with a manual pressure tester first to verify that that is the problem

Re: Engine overheating!!!

Would I need to remove the filter to do this? Seeing as I just changed the oil yesterday in the hopes that that would cure the problem

Re: Engine overheating!!!

When they qualify at daytona and talladega they use much lighter weight oil and it gives them about 15 horsepower. Heat also thins oil but a certain amount of heat makes oil work better up to a point. Try a taurus fan and it will cool your car. I just got rid of my dual fans and went the taurus route and it is enormously superior.
