getting real hot

just put a new motor in the car and it gets real hot, i shut it off before it overheats.

first drive the car got to 235 after 5 min of run time. this was using a stock radiator and a single 3000cfm puller fan(no shroud), 180 stat

swapped to a griffin radiator(31x19) and the same 3000cfm fan(no shroud) and i pulled the stat out i let the car idle for 20 min before i had to shut it off. reached 230 and was still climbing.

im using a digital summit temp gauge and sending unit is on the intake manifold.

i just ordered these fans

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLX-298/

also ordered a griffin 17 psi cap, just to be sure its not the cap

im hoping these fix the problem. i never want the car to get above 210 to 215 even if i let it idle for an hour.

anyone have anything to add about what could be causing this? or why it gets this hot?

Re: getting real hot

If everything else in the cooling system is up to snuff, the fans you ordered should hopefully make the difference. Most of the core is covered by the fans, and the bit that isn't is shrouded.

Your previous lack of shrouding means the parts of the core not covered by the single fan are not fully participating in cooling, and the fan can possibly be recirculating back some of it's own hot exhaust air.

Re: getting real hot

i was thinking that a shroud will solve the problem for sure. i will find out soon. i forgot to add i have a summit high flow water pump too. so the whole cooling system should be up to par after the fans.

ill post results after i get them on

Re: getting real hot

all i have to say is these fans are freaking huge. to get them to fit i had to trim the corner of the shroud. the fit is so tight it is ridiculous. i wired them up and i could feel them pulling at me feet. they moved the oil dry that was in front of the car.

if these things dont keep it cool i dont know what will.

i will post a nice review and install pics of the fans. i havent tried it yet as i want to put the a/c and smog delete pullys on first to keep them from dumping hot air in the engine bay also

Re: getting real hot

im really curious what you had to trim to get them to fit. is the griffin radiator thicker than stock?

Re: getting real hot

The griffin radiator is twice as thick and the fans are 4inches thick i still have like 3 inches between the belt. I had to trim the very corner of the shroud. The whole outside had a piece of weatherstripping so i peeled that back and cut then i tucked the weatherstripping around the hose. Ill post up pics to show...

But it is tight in there. I dont have to use any hold downs for it. I used metal pipe stapping attatched to the top of the fan and it acts as a radiator hold down as well. Its that tight of a fit.

I couldnt find any info of anyone using it on a car and now i know why. It said in the instructions it was made for trucks.

Re: getting real hot

Well it was 85the degrees out today and i let the car get to 205 before i turned the fans on and it took it down to 170 to 175 and held it there. So i think my overheating problem is done with. I highly recommend these fans to everyone.
