HVAC Temp slider stuck

I am having an issue with my 84 camaro 2.8 v6. The temp slider on the hvac controls will slide from about halfway over to full heat without any issue, but it will not move past halfway towards the cool side. It feels like it is being physically blocked. I had the console out and inspected the cables as far back into the dash as I could see and did not see any reason for the binding at the switch.

The car has factory a/c and appears to be unmolested under the hood.

What could this problem be? a broken damper door in the hvac box? Is that common and easy to inspect?

You may have kinked your cable, check it at the end of the cable that connects to the diverter box, have someone move the slide while your pushing and pulling on the cable.Try some WD40 on it before you do that.

Re: HVAC Temp slider stuck

Well the cable is definitely not kinked on the console end. I didnt actually disconnect anything associated with the hvac stuff, and I am pretty sure this was an issue before taking anything apart. Honestly I bought the car last fall, and immediately stripped the interior to look for rust. Just now got it all back together and decided to try the a/c. Thats when I noticed the temp slider issue.

Does anyone have any photos of the hvac box end of the cable and where it is? I am a newb when it comes to hvac stuff. If I know what it is supposed to look like I can probably figure the rest out.

I was thinking maybe a dead animal has gotten in there? I never noticed any smells and it is definitely hot enough for an animal to make a stink.

The car has 72k original miles so it obviously sat a long time at some point. a rusty pivot point or hinge is a high probability.

Re: HVAC Temp slider stuck

There are two possible connection points at the bottom of the "diverter door box". Hooking up to the wrong one may cause your "limit" problem. Try hooking up to the other point and see what happens.

Alright I will try that when the garage isn't 150 degrees. Thanks!

Here it is with my pushing towards cool hence the slight bend in the rod.

Any ideas as to whats going on? Should it be connected to the other post that currently has nothing on it?

Disconnect the cable and see if you can turn the door throughout it's range manually.

If my memory serves me correctly, that is the correct post

But try the other one for S and G's

If that doesn't fix it, you may have to take the "heater core cover" off and you'll be able to see what is physically binding the diverter. Good luck

Re: HVAC Temp slider stuck

It feels as if the linkage could move more than what it is, with the rod attached. I will try removing it tomorrow. As you cans see by the green crusty stuff it appears the heater core was leaking at some point and the dash had been removed. I seriously expected it to be incorrectly hooked up.

Re: HVAC Temp slider stuck

Some GM controls do get worn out and the temp slider gets stuck, so a new set is needed. If you remove the cables from your control head and it sticks, there's your problem.
