Taurus Fan
I have an overheating engine that needs assistance in cooling and the 1st thing that's been suggested to me for my current build is to upgrade the radiator fan (single) since it is stock and the engine is not. I've been reading about the Ford Taurus fan and believe this is what I will be putting into my car, just have 2 questions:
1. Where is the best (cheapest) place to obtain one of these?
2. What type of mods will I need to make to physically attach the fan (excluding any electric components)?

Re: Taurus Fan
You can get the Taurus fan from a wrecking yard from a 91-95 3.8l taurus. They are two speed and have very large wire and a round plug with 3 wires. The 95 models had a resettable breaker (fuse) that connected at the fan connector that is worth its weight in gold since you must have a 40 amp fuse for them. I mounted mine right against the radiator and lined mine with gasket sealer so I wouldnt rub a hole in anything. You don't have air leakage when they are mounted right against the rad. This is the best cooling mod I have ever done. Be sure you get the fan from a wrecking yard and not order one since you will get a Chinese fan and they are not as good as an OEM fan that came on a car. Mine was very dirty and looked like it was worn out but you can spin the fan and feel the bearings in the motor and tell how worn out they are. You will not be dissapointed. Be sure to use wire (fine stranded) bigger than what is on the fan motor.

Thank you so much for the info! Did you have to do any shroud modding to get this fan to fit in there?

Re: Taurus Fan
I measured my radiator at ~18" x 26". Looked around the net and ended up buying a 18" x 26" x 1" baking pan from amazon for $13 shipped. I will be cutting some of the original taurus shroud off, cutting out a portion of the pan, mounting the fan to the pan, and then mounting the pan to the radiator support. This way the fan will be pulling air from across the entire radiator. Not just a small portion.

Re: Taurus Fan
I will have -2- 14in fans flush on the stock rad which is only 26in across....ALSO notice the stock fan setup in these cars dont have a shroud...
-Also my Taurus fan is NOT modded in any way shape or form. Pics coming some time today.

Re: Taurus Fan
I pulled my radiator and rested the fan on it to see how it would mount the best. I did grind some of the fan housing to get it to lay flat. I used the gasket sealer to glue it to the passenger tank on the rad and also on the top and bottom of the rad. The glue method works great with no tabs going through the rad. The harness is sticking out the passenger side where the wiring and controller is so it all worked out great. Drove the car about 17 miles today over 100 degree heat and it got around 195 and back down to 180. I couldn't be more happy with this set-up and I still haven't added the pusher fan I have been meaning to add to support the A/C when I get it completed. And I am still running pure water right now and not antifreeze and purple ice like I should have already done but I will wait untill I add the pusher in case I have to pull something and lose all of my water. Don't forget to have the air dam and baffle installed for highway use.

Re: Taurus Fan
Hmm I am in need of upgrading my cooling fans as also. Well my Cooling fan since when I got my car one of the fans were missing, but it wasnt running that hot till I put in the new carb'ed 355. Now that its got the bigger motor its definatly running hot and since I can never seem to find any Firebird fans in the boneyard I may check this set up out. So what you all are saying is I can use 2 of these Taurus fans (with some modifications) instead of the stock ones that come with the Firebirds? Anyone have any pics of these installed in the thirdgen?

Re: Taurus Fan
Now I have some wiring questions. First off, I was intending to setup the Taurus fan to run on it's higher setting f/t since my stock fan is connected via a toggle switch. If I understand correctly this is not recommended for several reasons, one of which is because it could melt the connection wires? If I cannot setup the fan in this manner, what would be the best way to do it to get the benefits of this fan and resolve my heating issues? Should I just connect the fan to my ignition so its starts up on the lowest setting and then somehow wire it to the toggle so I can flip over to the higher setting when I notice the heat start to rise? Do I need to go another route for my heating issues?

Whats wrong with them that your wanting to put a dual speed single fan??
Fix your factory dual fans properly and you'll be fine. You can make them run cooler if you need to with the proper parts.

Re: Taurus Fan
I wouldn't wire it to run all the time. This fan pulls a lot of juice and if you are sitting with the car off but forget and leave the key on you will run the battery down QUICK. Run bigger wire to the fan than what the fan came with and ground it through the fan switch in the passenger head. That would be simple and should work great. make sure your air dam and baffle is on and in good shape and it will cool the car better going 35 or faster than any fan can. You have to have a 40 amp fuse for taurus fan or find a 95 model taurus and get the factory resetable fuse like I found out they made. Makes life easy and simply plugs into the factory harness.

Hi patin88z: does your $30 fan have the resettable breaker as mentioned in post #3 above?

2 the 2 guys that bought a fan from me, you need to open a paypal dispute. Those ....fools just perma-locked my account for no reason...and are holding all my money and even reversed a bank deposit AND are holding the money that I sent for some car parts! Open a dispute so the process can get started, and no its not giving me an option to refund....

Do you have your fan connected to utilize both speeds? If so, how often do you use the higher speed and for how long?

Re: Taurus Fan
I got mine from a '95 Cougar supposed to be a little bit bigger/more powerful fan than the Taurus one, also the Lincoln Mark VII I believe used the bigger fan as well. I had to cut about 3/4" off the thickness so it'd clear the water pump pulley and notch the bottom of the lower core support a little so everything would fit. I came up with a way to run it two speed using temp switches but now since I'm running a 7427 PCM I use it to control the fan. This is how I did it using temp switches https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cool...d-2-speed.html

Re: Taurus Fan
My current plan is to get a Taurus fan and hook it up with a Jegs control module that would kick the fan on at settable temp with the higher speed to follow 10* higher. The module has 2, 50 amp relays so I'm wondering if this would be a good idea and will it be enough?
