simple ? about water pumps

I have a 87 v belt/ ribbed belt set up on my car. I have a aftmrk alm water pump can I use that pump on a serp set up any why do eveyone wants the serp set up does it use less energy to move. I dont plan on putting a procharger on it. I was told that serp water pump is revers flow. I thought that was LT1

Re: simple ? about water pumps

No, your stock setup is normal rotation, full serpentine uses a reverse rotation pump. This because of the way the belt wraps the pulley

LT1 is reverse flow cooling

Re: simple ? about water pumps

Right: you don't have a "serpentine" belt. Just a wide flat ribbed one, of the same style as "serpentine" drive systems use.

"Serpentine" is derived from Latin; means "snake-like". Re. belts, it means ones that kind of wind their way in loops all around among the accessories.

If the belt drives the pump with its inner side (the ribbed side, in your case) it's forward rotation. Most serpentine systems drive the WP with the back (flat) side. That turns it the opposite direction. "Reverse rotation". A whole other thing, different from "reverse flow". The serpentine systems for typical small blocks still suck in at the lower hose, and blow out through the legs, then the cool water goes into the block, up through the heads, and out the top. The LT1, the cool water goes into the heads, down through the block after it gets heated up in the heads, then out the bottom.

People tend to prefer the serpentine drive systems because the belt stays put better, and generally causes less trouble. They may THINK it has to do with "energy", but they're deluding themselves if they do.
