Can you delete the oil cooler ?
Hey guys,
My oil cooler, the one thats directly ontop of the oil filter, still leaks after having new pipes put on because i couldnt find a replacement at the time, and to top it off ive now got a hairline crack somewhere on one of the metal pipes nearer the front of the engine.
Ive got a new radiator im fitting soon and looking at the pipes and hoses, it looks like it would be pretty easy to just take it all off and delete the cooler altogether.
Would i notice much difference in temperature as i know not all the V8 3rd gens have these anyway ?

Re: Can you delete the oil cooler ?
it screws off usually from the center 1 to 1 1/4 size
they are screwed on just like thte oil filter screws on and you can take them off and just put your filter on where it was the LT1 oil coolers use coolant at that filter but to be honest unless your towing or racing you dont really need one

Re: Can you delete the oil cooler ?
Ive had it off the car before to put the new pipes on so i know how it comes off, i was just wondering if the engine/cooling system would suffer without it. I sort of guessed it wouldnt as my car tends to stay quite cool when driving around, it only really heats up if im stuck in traffic etc, but ive usually switched both fans on by then anyway
To be honest i will probably just leave the cooler in place and cap the pipes off coming out of it until i do my next oil change

Yes you can delete it.
Without having an oil temp gauge there is no way to tell if it does any good.
If you live in a mild climate, you pobably don't need it.

I'm in Montreal, don't have one and don't have any probs, but it would be nice for when I road race tho :S
I actually want to get a tranny temp gauge and an engine oil temp gauge and put the gauges in the cigarette ashtray location. It's probably been done before.

I like to put my foot down now and then but i dont race etc
Im always keeping an eye on my gauges making sure everything ok, but when i put the knight rider dash in soon im going to be relying on digital gauges that i dont know the accuracy of, i want some pod gauges too but ive been told i cant have two digital gauges as they will give false readings
