water pump!!!

Im not asking for help. Stand back ..... I got this lol I am just posting here in case anyone needs help with diagnosing a failed water pump.

So I start my bird up. I hear a very weird rattling noise. And I thought to my self dam I shouldnt have raced that honda civic last night.

Well I honestly thought the noise at first was a rod knocking. 190K in my car and I havnt been nice to her lol. Driving nice anyways. Well a couple days pass as I am driving to work and one morning I come out to my car and there is a puddle underneath her(coolant). So I knew it had to be the water pump and MAN WAS IT. I could almost pull the pulley off the front of the pump it was so loose and bearings shot. So the way I knew it was the water pump was from the pulley bearings. It wasnt leaking out the weep hole as it usually would.

Also there was no gasket on the water pump just silicone? Really is that even possible? I thought that was weird as this is the factory water pump. I think? it says GMC JAPAN on it weirder.

Anyways, just thought I would share my water pump experience. I loosened the pulley by pushing a little bit of radiator hose in between the crank pulley since the belts were shot lol and the water pump could spin freely. I got the pulley off and water pump off in about an hour. Doesnt take to long with the V-belt set up and I think that is probably the harder since its 3 belts and not 1. Thanks guys Later!

Re: water pump!!!

that "GMB JAPAN"waterpump is an older aftermarket replacement, common in the 80s and '90s.They might still be made, but probably in korea, taiwan or china . these days.

Hey thanks for that info. Good to know its been changed before. I cant believe they didnt use a gasket and it worked for so long haha. Auto parts store guy told me it works but I would much rather use a gasket like they did from the factory. Its really hard to spin the water pump like its seized up. And this is where the rattling noise came from for definite. After a better inspection I could see where it was leaking out the weep hole. So yes it was leaking out the weep hole to reiterate what I mentioned about the leak before. FUN STUFF haha.

Re: water pump!!!

Same thing on my daughters 84. Car had been sitting for years. After getting it running, it was in need of exhaust replacement so it sounded like junk. Had the exhaust replaced and it still did not sound that good. Shortly after noticed the antifreeze leaking at the pump. Replaced pump and it sounds great.
