AC cycling problem

1991 Vert 5.0 a/c retrofitted and developed a strange problem.. Ac blows cold, pressures are in the normal range. AC clutch kicks off and then wont engage for a while. If I rev the motor in gear while driving (like kick it into passing gear) it will engage. It then eventually will disengage. I tried jumping the low pressure switch, but still wont engage. But here is the kicker.. If I tap the front plate of the clutch, it engages. Almost seems like the magnet that pulls that plate to lock the clutch is weak.. Any ideas what to check or what the issue may be?

Any help is appreciated

Re: AC cycling problem

Make sure you are getting a strong 13V at the clutch coil. Clean the connector and the pins, a little corrosion will reduce the voltage.

Re: AC cycling problem

At least its blowing cold,I too have a 91 vert and it will not blow any cold air, I tried adding AC refridgerent. Now I see my compressor is not cycling at all with the ac on. Do you know where the power to the ac compressor clutch is at? So I can bypass it to see if it works? I have looked online but no luck. And all my relays seem to work.

Axle/Gears: Stock? Lol
Your clutch coil gap could be too big. Use a feeler gauge and see. If not the coil internal to the compressor might be failing
