Hi guys, I have a 1992 Chevy Camaro RS and Ive had this little problem for some time now. If I drive the car on long trips or just a lot in one day the temp gauge would climb to the point of overheating, I would turn heat on so it would drop down a little. I have had the radiator replaced, the hoses, thermostat and the fan works and there are no leaks but gauge would still climb. Am I missing something? Please help me out.

 

You could try to test the sensors. I believe the one on the thermostat housing is the one that actually works the gauge, although I could be wrong since there is one in the head too. If you have a DMM set it to check resistance and probe the sensor on the therm housing, i believe it should be around 7-800 ohms when hot and a couple thousand when cold. Every gauge on these cars will lie to you, and as I"m sure everyone else will tell you, you aren't actually overheating unless you have coolant boiling in the overflow.

 

"Sensors" won't cure "overheating".

Sounds like your air dam is missing. All too common of a PO f-up.

 

^^ He's probably right, every post i've seen from him is spot on. The point I was making was just to make sure that it's ACTUALLY overheating and not just telling you that it is.

 

It actually overheated once. I will try your suggestions and thank you guys. Tune in for the results.

my car is over heating too. its a 1992 Camaro RS. I changed the thermostat and both sensors. the one on the intake and on the side of the head. I cant get my fan to kick on. I ran a switch and ran the positive wire to the fan and I can turn it on with a switch. but it wont turn on by its self. I wonder if he is having the same issue

 

do you have one or two fans?

Have you checked the relay to make sure it's working? You can short the two fat leads on the connector together to bypass the relay. If the fan turns on, your relay is bad. Its up near the firewall by the brake booster.

Does the fan come on when you engage the AC? If not, does the second fan come on when you engage the AC? Both fans should turn on regardless when the AC is turned on.

The fan does come on. If I unplug the relay and jump a positive wire to the power to kick the fan on, the fan comes on.

 

The sensor you replaced on the drivers side or passenger side?

Since the fan comes on with the AC, this eliminates a circuit or wiring issue.

If you jump the relay and the fan comes on, that's 90% the relay is bad. With the relay connected have you grounded the wire to the fan switch in the passenger side head? If this works then the relay is good and the switch is bad/not grounding properly. Also make sure the connectors are seated all the way when hooking the relay up. I ran into a problem where the terminals weren't making good contact even though the relay was plugged in.

 

Just to clarify, when you disconnect the relay you jumped the two fat wires together on the now disconnected connector? One is power from the car and the other is power to the fan, by shorting them together bypasses the relay.

 

Make sure you're getting 12v to the relay from the ignition source "key on". Double check the ground wire coming off of the relay. If you are check the wiring configuration on the new relay . Not all relays are wired the same.
