What water pump do you use?
What water pump do you use?
So i recently bought a new 3 core aluminum Rad from the recommendations on this website. My water pump is old, looks rusted, and i think its time to replace it with a High performance pump. My only problem is I have no idea where to get a good High performance pump. I read that the Stewart pumps are some of the best, and would like to get one. I don't know if they make a Water pump for a 86 trans am, as all i saw on there website was Chevy.
I was looking at a stage 2 Stewart's for reference.
Any input is appreciated Thanks

And when i bought the car the guy said it has a 350 bored with a 383 on it, but who knows lol.

Re: What water pump do you use?
Water pumps come in long and short for SBCs, ours are the long ones. They also come in clockwise and anti-clockwise rotations. The anti-clockwise are for the later model serpentine systems. You want a long nose clockwise rotation pump. That one looks right.

$37.00 Autozone special for me! If you have V-belts, you want standard rotation. If you have serpentine belt, you want reverse rotation (Spins backwards but flows like the Vbelt style). For LT1 you want "reverse flow". There is a huge difference. All our water pumps are "long" style on our cars.

The one in your pic won't work. It's the "short" version. Pre-1970 for the most part. You need the "long" one, clockwise rotation.
You have a Chevy (GM); just, some other stickers and wrinkles in the sheet metal, to get more money out of people who just had too much at the time, I guess. The parts THAT COUNT are all the same.
I run Stewart also.

Re: What water pump do you use?
Should; as long as it's set up for the correct direction of rotation. Which would be, clockwise, in the case of the motor in the pic. Alternatively, NOT for serpentine setups.

To me it looks like your water pump was changed. They come without paint on them most of the time. Someone was in a hurry and didn't take the time to paint yours. Is it leaking out of the weep hole underneath.

Re: What water pump do you use?
On my 350 I used a cheap Advance Auto stock style replacement for 10+ years when it was in my Camaro, and the car ran as cool as a cucumber. Now that the motor is going into my GTA which uses the newer serpentene system, I painted and installed the 150k mile water pump that served the stock 305 faithfully for the last 25 years. Water pumps aren't the type of thing that I get excited about. The stock replacements are perfectly adequate 99% of the time. There are far better places for me to spend my money.

I have run a Edlebrock WP on my car since the mid 90s, going to send it in for a rebuild this winter just because it has around 150,000k miles on it.

Last time I was losing coolant with no puddles under my car was because of a blown head gasket. Not on my camaro though. Hopefully thats not the case with your car. I am in the middle of changing my water pump because coolant is leaking from the hole underneath.

Re: What water pump do you use?
I have a 92 z28 with 5.7 and am looking for a high flow water pump. I have a serpentine belt but have no idea if it is reverse. Any suggestions?

Re: What water pump do you use?
If the belt is actually "serpentine" (remember your grade-school Latin: "snake-like") as opposed to merely flat and ribbed, then the WP needs to be reverse rotation. If the back (flat) side of the belt goes around the WP then it's "serpentine".
Yes Chevrolet is a GM brand.
Sorry, I haven't forgot my Latin after all these years. Not only that, but, it hasn't really changed much since then.
Very useful language. Out of all the languages I know, one of the most useful. RIght next to Greek in that regard. Go learn it if you have forgotten it already, it will amply repay you.
