cooling fan trouble

I hav a 92 camaro with a 305 and single electric fan, which i hate, and im having trouble wit it now i was told if i ground the wire to the fan switch and the fan comes on its the fan switch. Well guess what im on the 3rd fan switch in a month so wtf is going on. I mean i replace the switch and let the car run and the temp climbs above 220 before the fan kicks on but then itll stop working all together within a few days. I find it hard that i got 3 bad switchs in a row so ideas on whats happening?

The single electric fan runs automatically by a ground signal from the fan switch.

The switch grounds, sending a signal to the fan relay up on the firewall, which energizes sending power to the fan. The fan switch from the factory turns the fan on at 225*.

1. The fan turns on, so it's not your fan motor.
2. Turn the AC on, does your fan come on? If it does, then the circut itself is good. If it doesn't, it's a good indication that the fuseable link may be bad.

3. With the fan switch disconnected. Turn the ignition to "Run" without turning the car on. This will energize the circut. Ground the wire that goes to it to chassis ground. The fan should turn on. If it does, then the switch is bad. Or, it's possible you have too much teflon on the threads and it's not making good contact so no good ground signal is getting through. Only way to check is to run up to temp after re-wrapping it with less teflon. If it doesn't turn on with the wire grounded to chassisplug the wire back into the switch.

4. If the fan didn't turn on with the wire grounded in the previous step, then you need to check the relay. Reconnect the wire and move up to the fan relay. Disconnect the relay. Turn the ignition to "run" without turning the car on. Short the two fat wire-connectors (Fairly easy to tell the fat wires from the skinny wires on the relay connector) using a piece of 10 Gauge wire. This bypasses the relay. The fan shoud turn on. If the fan doesn't turn on, then either the fan motor is bad, or the fuseable link in the line is bad. IF the fan does turn on, then your relay is bad.

Also, be sure that all of the wires are fully seated when the relay is connected. I had this problem in my 84 T/A which made me think the relay was bad and it really wasn't.

I hope this helps!

Re: cooling fan trouble

Is this fan stock? or did you or somebody wire it in?
Sounds like the fan switch is being overloaded, like a relay was not used in the fan circuit.
I would say the switches are going out because of an over-stress of electrical current.

Re: cooling fan trouble

Im thinkn to much tuflon tape, i didnt put it on it came pre-wrapped in it.
If the fan switch wire is grounded it turns on so ik its the switch.
It use to work perfectly till i broke it working on the exhaust manifold and replaced it, since replacing it is when the trouble started.
And yes its factory, was working before replacing the switch.

Its been so cold so i havent had a chance to look at it.
