Evaporator Housing Cracked

1987 IROC Z28 with 5.0L TPI

I removed the evaporator on my Camaro and noticed that there is a large crack in the bottom of the evaporator housing. Can I patch that crack with something?

Also, the evaporator seems to have weather stripping around the left side of it in a square shape, and the replacement doesn't. Is that just the cheap weatherstripping that they sell to seal around the windows of your car?

The reason I am replacing the evaporator is because I took the car to a mechanic to check for leaks after I flushed the lines, installed a rebuilt compressor, expansion tube, R-134a compatible O-rings, and receiver drier. He said there was a leak at the union between the liquid line and evaporator fitting, then told me to replace the line.

I pulled the line off to see if it could be repaired at a local place called Carlisle and noticed that the fitting on the evaporator side was pretty mangled. I asked them how much to replace the evaporator, "$900-$1200". That's funny.

Also, does anyone have a tip to install the new liquid line without crushing the expansion tube to smithereens? I installed a Ford Blue expansion valve with the tool but it looks like it got damaged during install.

Oh yeah, is there supposed to be a small hole somewhere for the evaporator to drain, or is that somewhere else?

Re: Evaporator Housing Cracked

Yeah they're ALL "cracked" in various ways; mostly, the part right above the manifold, crystallizes to dust.

But you can easily repair that with yerbasic typical fiberglass repair stuff. The cloth, the resin, etc. Just make sure that wherever it has to stick to the factory stuff, you sand it real good with some real coarse sandpaper (36 grit would be the finest to use for that), so that the new stuff has plenty to grab onto.

If memory serves, the evap drain is a sort of slot in (get ready for this) the VERY BOTTOM of the housing. Not hard to spot it.

For sealing everything to the firewall and whatnot, I use windshield sealer. Comes in a roll, black gooey sticky chunky funky spunky munky gunk. In the tower climbing business we used to call it "bear s***". Amazing stuff, you'll LOVE it once you learn how to use it. A clue: lacquer thinner is your friend. NOTHING will stick to ANYTHING that's not clean EVER no matter what the late-night TV pitchman says, and LT is the perfect stuff for cleaning it up.

Here's a few shots of the drain hole for reference (last is the bottom, outside)...

Re: Evaporator Housing Cracked

Thanks for the pictures, I appreciate it. I bought some different epoxies and plastic repair kits, and some foil tape. One way or another it's getting fixed.
