I have a dual electric fan set up on my '91. Recently one fan died and I replaced it - no problems. With the age of the motor, I decided to replace the other one as well and the parts store (NAPA) handed me the exact same motor. I was OK until I installed it.

The electrical connector would not mate properly. If I installed it correctly (connector clip grabbing the housing tab) the connector would not seat into the housing correctly. If I flipped it over, it would seat correctly but the clip had nothing to grab and the fan ran backwards.

Every parts store I contacted had the same motor listed for both sides.

Are there really different motors or should I reconfigure the motor lead so the connector mates properly and the fan spins in the correct direction?

 

I'm in the process of building a 3-speed control harness for another members' TPI fans-it sounds as though the fan motors you got do not have the correct fan connector-it should be a metri-pack 630 series 2 cavity male. Do you have a closeup pic of them?

 

Here is a pic of the motor I removed. Everything looks correct - 2 pin, guides on the top side, and retaining clip in the bottom side. I am thinking I got a bum replacement from NAPA but, if needed, I could swap the polarity of the wires to make it work right. This, however, would not fix the retainer clip orientation.

I think I will go buy another motor from a different source and see what I find unless you see something I am missing. Thanks.

 

Without the correct terminals, you can't really swap them on the harness end-they release and pop through the end and pull back through to seat....if you want/need to swap the leads, I can supply you with new terminals and connectors/seals if you need. I recommend crimp/solder the terminals. PM me if interested.
