88 IROC Z Fans not coming on 5.7

Good Day,
Last week my AC compressor went out on me. On Saturday I replaced it with a Bypass pulley. The job went smooth only with one problem. Now my fans are not working. After putting on the part I took a drive and all was good on they highway. I went to get a oil change and took the streets and noticed the car overheating. I made it home and let the car cool down. I started to car and let it idle it went to overheat again. I turned on the AC to see if the fans would come on but nothing. After looking around I noticed that the previous owner did some crazy wiring to looks like everything. This worries me as I found one red wire going to nothing with electrical tape on it. I also noticed relays with wires taped to them. Long story short the fans were working before the AC bypass pulley was installed. Any help would be appreciated. I will post photos when I get home.

I know that he a/c will also turn on the cooling fans. when you pulled out your a/c did you take out your fuse and relay for the a/c

Thanks for the reply. No sir the only thing came out was the AC compressor. It had to Electrical leads to it. I just disconnected those when I removed the Compressor.

Do you still have the compressor? or did you get rid of it. If you still have it then take the lead and connect them to the compressor and see if it works then. If not then I would look for a way to get a wiring schematic for the cooling fan circuit. or just hard wire it to a switch installed in the car.

With all the ecm fan issues, as a last (and FINAL) option you can run a dedicated relay system as a stand alone to the ecm. You can run the fans together, individually or wire them with several speeds in parallel....there's a lot of options once you remove the ecm of its burden to control fan turn on.

Do you still have power to the fans? Run a 12v line from the battery terminals and see if the fans still spin.

Since the fan's don't come on even with the AC, I would look immediately at two places once I know the fans are good.

1. The fan relay.
2. The fusible link before the relay that provides power to the relay to engage the fans.

Re: 88 IROC Z Fans not coming on 5.7

Thanks for the replies guys I figured it out. The previous owner had a power wire running from the battery to the relay. The wire is running under the fan brace and back up. I'm guessing it was pulled some way. When I seen it the first time I was thinking maybe it was a amp wire or something because I never seen fans wired up like that. There is hacked wiring all over the car. some wires lead to nothing. Looks like I got my work cut out for me because I want to fix this. Now I got to find out why my radio and cig lighter just stopped working. I love this car and will not give up.

Re: 88 IROC Z Fans not coming on 5.7

Hello I just bought my first car, it's a 1986 camaro 305 with a 4 barrel carb on it. It a base model, nothing special. It overheats and the cooling fan won't come on I don't want to jerry rig it in any way, I just want to change the sensor that could possibly be bad. I changed the fan blower relay by the brake booster and I also changed a sensor on the passenger head near the oil dipstick it is connected to a green wire and it still won't come on, the fan works if I turn the A/C on, I let it heat up to about 220 then I kick it on but it won't come on automatically if I jump out the A/C fan relay it will kick on. I see another sensor on the drivers side head I'm not sure what it's for or what it does, I'm stuck and don't know what else to changed. Please help me I'm open to any suggestions. Thank you

Search, lots of info on the subject.

Make sure the connector on the relay is making good contact. Also, dont use too much Teflon on the switch as it cause poor contact for the switch which will cause issues.

Run the car up to temp, with the wire to the switch disconnected, ground the wire to chassis ground. The fan should turn on. If it doesn't, you have a relay issue.
