overheating

Hey everyone. I've been trying to solve this problem all summer and cant quite seem to get to the bottom of it. The car is an 89 camaro with a 383 stroker and supercharger running about 7 lbs. Now the car runs at 220 or even a little hotter at some points no matter what I do. I have added 2 15 inch fans one pusher and one puller on a griffin 2 core aluminum radiator with the fans on a 185 degree switch. I tried removing and adding a thermostat and running water wetter with the coolant. I have also added a trans and oil cooler and nothing has seemed to help. What should my next step be? maybe header wrap?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: overheating

Are you only relying on the temp gauge for these readings? They are often not all that accurate. Get an infrared temp gun and measure the temp at the thermostat neck or on the hose from there and you may find that you are not running so hot as it seems

Re: overheating

Air dam in place?
Are the fans coming on while cruising and fighting the regular air flow?
Have you confirmed with an aftermarket gauge?
When is it at 220 all the time?
What water pump?

Re: overheating

Thats a good idea i should check if the gauge is right. It is sitting at 220 all the time whether im cruising at 45 or stopped at a light. I'm not sure if the fans would be hindering air flow they seem to move alot of air when the car is sitting still I can feel air plowing out of the owl hood. I am running a stock water pump that is only a year old or so.

thanks for the ideas guys keep them coming!!

Re: overheating

No idea how accurate they are but I would get an IR temp gun or if your fans come on at 185 wait until they come on and check the gauge to see if it is at 185.
The air dam creates a different air pressure zone and helps draw air though the radiator. If you have the fans on after a certain speed it can actually reduce the amount of air going through the radiator and you get hotter on the expressway. Post a pic of your engine bay it might help if anything looks out of place

Re: overheating

220* is normal temp for these cars factory so unless your boiling over, I wouldn't worry about it too much. you can run a 180 thermostat, that should help it cool down on the highway a little more. As mentioned, run the IR gun on the engine, our temp gauges aren't known to be the most accurate after 30 years. However, you can do an LS fan swap if you want to help pull more air through. The fan shroud on those really seems to help.
