Cold air intake
I have a 92 firebird with a 3.1 L V6. I was thinking about doing a cold air intake, but i just cant seem to find one anywhere. Anyone know where i could find one? And how much would it effect the car?

You maybe able to make this work with a different tb adapter.

Re: Cold air intake
You can accomplish the same thing (minus the shiny rice-pipes) with the stock air cleaner. Remove the stock filter can, salvage the intake air temp sensor and throw the bottom half of the can away. Drill a hole for the IAT in the bottom of the plastic duct wherever the wires will still reach, and screw it in. Drop the filter back on the baseplate, set the lid on top of the filter, reconnect the plastic duct and you've got a "cold air intake".
Alternatively you can just drill out the rivets and pull the goofy snorkel off the can and you'll go from a ~1" opening to a 3" opening. Or drill/cut a bunch of holes in the can... Or just throw the can away.
How much difference will it make? It'll make the intake air more noisy. It won't make it enough faster that you could measure a difference, but you can't hurt it.

Re: Cold air intake
If you find a REAL NICE one for it, one of those that has lots of bling, it might make the car noticeably faster, by way of weight reduction, concentrated at the driver's wallet.

I think I've seen sofa make a non-smart comment once, maybe. haha.
You're not gonna notice much at all putting a cold air intake on a 24 year old v6 engine. If you want it to breath better then put a decent exhaust on it and a K&N filter.

I don't think you're going to see much difference on a 2.8 or 3.1L without a power adder. My old 3.1 Firebird had 2.5" exhaust, no cat, K&N filter, and a cold air like described above. Best time on the Gtech (hey, we ain't wasting time taking the winter beater to the dragstrip) was a 16.9. Best thing I ever did was throw the nitrous setup off my Formula on it. Jetted for 125hp it turned the 3.1 into a complete animal. If I were driving a 3.1L Firebird now, I'd probably be seriously looking into bolting on a turbo, just to save refilling the bottle all the time.

Re: Cold air intake
Ok. The v6 is in great shape only standing at 60k miles. And with the cold air induction im lpoking at comes a K&N filter. I just wanted the car to run better.
Re: Cold air intake
It'll run the same, just louder. Cold air kits are marketed because they're cheap to make, easy to install, and on some cars with baffles and noise cancelling chambers, etc they can make a car sound like it's running stronger. Just be realistic with your expectations, there is no practical advantage.

Re: Cold air intake
Just an update! I put a Cold air induction in the car and it does run better and cleaner. Little bit more air, and a bit more fuel. I also added a stage 1 jet chip to the car. I know it worked because i raced the same car multiple times before and after and i lost by a car before and won by a car after.

Re: Cold air intake
Freeing up air to the engine is always nice but I always get a kick out of the term "Cold Air Induction".
Your either grabbing air from out side of the bay in the cold of winter or have a bag of ice sitting on the filter in the bay.
This is as close to true cold air induction as it gets and my favorite.
And its a stock setup.

Re: Cold air intake
CAI i put on my truck. the aluminum tube used to get hot from sucking under hood heat. i put some sheetmetal around the filter and now i get a trouble code saying the AIT sensor is reading to cold preventing closed loop operation, lol.
