radiator blew
Hey guys. I have a 305 87 iroc...I was driving in a parking lot and the temp got up to about 200...below the 220 mark on the gauge. I pulled over and shut of the engine. Is that okay or did I damage the engine...i'm not sure how hot these can get

Re: radiator blew
Well, stock fan turn-on temp is around 220*-230... Probably fine, but I wouldn't make a habit of letting it heat up too much. Plenty of cooling system troubleshooting threads already, not really up to going there... Check airdam, check a/c condenser and radiator for obstructions (leaves, dead bugs, etc)... And so on...

Re: radiator blew
If your two fans come on when you turn the key on, somebody hard wired them to do that. One is controlled by a temp sensor in the head to come on first, the other will come on when AC is on or the computer turns it on.

Re: radiator blew
Yeah but running that cool is not normal tho...it always runs about 150? Are they suppose to run warmer?

Re: radiator blew
factory the car should run around 190 and the fan should come on about 235. The factory gauge is also an inaccurate POS. Mine reads at the red line when my fan comes on at 235 verified by another gauge and IR temp gun.

Re: radiator blew
You can replace the sender and it might help the gauge but I have tried a few and none of them match my aftermarket gauge, fan switch or IR temp gun. My aftermarket gauge says 210 when my fan turns on designed at 211 and my IR gun reads between 210 and 212 so I trust them more than the factory gauge.

Thanks man...yeah I told my mechanic was the awesome ppl at ThirdGen.org told me . He will fix me up the best he can. We were planning on taking it to him in about a month to get a 100% look over and replace and or repair things that needed to be fixed, so bc of the radiator I'm going to get everything on the car looked at and inspected sooner. Will keep you updated on what he finds.

Re: radiator blew
Hey guys...so I told a friend about what happened to my radiator. So he said that since my coolant was running so cool 150temp that could have been the problem. I told him I was coming of an exit ramp and really got onto the gas good and then about 3 miles down onto another exit ramp, and when I pulled into the parking lot I noticed that the heat temp was rising. He said that I built up steam and either you get a blown head gasket and or the side tanks on the radiator let go. The radiator did look like it was leaking from the top left side. The radiator didn't look old. He said that basically when you mash the gas the pumps crank up and pump more water which would have caused it? What do you guys think? Either way...its at my mechanics and if it was missing a T-stat or w/e its ALL going to get fixed! O and my mechanic is busy so hasent had time to look at the car...I'm just asking around is all and don't want to bother him right now.
