1992 z28 dual fan car overheating

My 1992 z28 350 has been overheating and I think it has to do with the fans.It is a dual fan car and one fan works but I've never noticed both of them working at once and it tends to overheat in stop and go driving. Don't know much about this problem so any help is appreciated.

Re: 1992 z28 dual fan car overheating

I'm pretty sure that second fan only comes on with the air conditioning. Someone might want to double check me on that, but I think that's the case.

....as for overheating, have you replaced any parts of the cooling system recently. If the radiator and/or water pump are original, it's certainly a possibility they are due for replacement. I don't typically suggest throwing money and parts at a problem, but parts do wear out. It's a 26 year old vehicle and it sounds like you want to hang on to it. Sometimes parts that aren't downright broken still do need to be replaced. Also, a coolant flush isn't a bad idea. Get's all that crud out. .....or it may be something as simply as a stuck thermostat. That's an easy fix.....but....again, wouldn't be a bad idea to go through the system and get it running tip top.

Thx for responding I will see if I can try a few of those things and figure it out.

The fan switch on the passenger head actuates the secondary fan or AC on should as well. If the fan switch was out the AC on should do it, so I'd be checking the secondary fan relay for failure. Follow the wires back from that fan to find it. Oh, and this would be done only after you put 12 volts to the fan to verify that it's not the problem

Re: 1992 z28 dual fan car overheating

How hot would the car need to get to be considered overheating? I was told the second fan doesn't even come on until 245F and the primary fan has always worked but idk if I've ever had the hood up when the car was as hot as 245F to even see if the secondary fan works...so maybe the car isn't even overheating and maybe both fans work I'm not even sure.

Re: 1992 z28 dual fan car overheating

I would start by jumping the secondary fan to see if it even works. If it does, you should then test the aux fan relay or temp sensor.

But I think the fans are your issue if it only gets hot in stop and go traffic. If it cools properly at speed the rest of your cooling system is working fine. A flush never hurts of course, and a bottle of water wetter might help a bit too.

Re: 1992 z28 dual fan car overheating

install a larger fan rely..and run both fans at the same time... (this fix has been done and works fine..did my car when it was brand new in 1992 Z28)
