Re: I need AC

You can try to retrofit an aftermarket system, or just find someone tearing apart a car that's close to your year and just swap all the factory stuff you need. Inner and outer boxes, wiring, controls, compressor etc

An aftermarket setup from someone like Vintage Air will probably be your best, most cost-effective route. AFAIK though, there's no 'direct bolt-in' kit for your car; you'd need to purchase a builders' package and then modify it as necessary to fit. There would be a relatively high level of fabrication skill required to pull this off to make the install look good as well as function properly.

I guess you could chase a junkyard 1984 Camaro (good luck with that endeavor) with air and remove all the AC components along with the related engine cooling system parts to swap over to your car, but that would entail probably more work doing the removal than the install. Additionally, don't forget that all the wiring for the AC, cooling fans, dash controls, etc., is embedded in the donor car's harnesses. Plus, you'd be buying 35-year-old parts, probably many of them needing either replacement or a rebuild before they're serviceable.

Have you considered simply selling your car and then looking for one already optioned more to your liking?

Thanks, I've had the car over 20 years I'd rather attached to it. Will ACB easier after I change the drivetrain? I'm going with an LS3

I can't see that an engine swap would make any real difference unless you plan to go the junkyard-parts route; the firewall-mounted components might be easier to install while the engine is out of the car. This is purely conjecture on my part though; maybe one of the many 3rd gen/LS owners posting here can advise you further.

Good luck.

Yes it is easier since there are a few screws behind the head

Re: I need AC

My 84 Trans Am came with A/C that is NOT going back in the car. But the firewall box(es) are still in the car and the related wiring. The rest is out. I am not planning to change the heater control. Basically just swapping to a non-AC box and (I guess) disabling any flap doors so that heat and fresh air are routed correctly.
Since your are swapping to an LS, the only items I can see you really needing is the firewall AC box and heater control. Everything else should be replaced. Like ironwill said - 35 year old parts.
