Hey! Any help or input would be much appreciated. so Ive searched the entire website and I have a question that no one else has asked. I need to replace my A/C fan control pressure switch, engine cooling pressure switch, or condenser fan switch, whatever you want to call it. GM part # is 14089590 , ACDelco PN # is 15-2517. There is ONE available across the internet for $148 + $12 shipping on ebay ( https://www.ebay.com/itm/261174837278 ). I would like to not spend that much. Surfing ebay, I see that there are hundreds of similar parts that look just like it except a different part number or different color plastic but same exact shape and size, so im wondering if theres anything else i can use as an alternative? Are there differences? If so, is it like a different pressure sensetivity? maybe thats not bad, maybe if my secondary fan activated at 10 psi or whatever lower than normally then no harm done.

Rock auto has plenty of aftermarket replacement switched that are all under $20. Any reason why you don't want that?


AC Delco 15-2151 is what they list as GM.

 

Thanks for the response. Im not against anything on rock auto. just looking for an alternative part. The delco 15-2151 that you mentioned is a different part. Thats the A/C compressor Clutch Switch that screws into the Accumulator. Close but not quite what im looking for. I will try attach a picture of what im looking for to help.

unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be it either. That’s the one that is embedded into the back of the AC compressor, not threaded into the High pressure line.

check early 4th gens. sometimes..... some......parts........... are interchangeable. be sure to research deep or you may waste your $$. these switches have different pressure ranges depending on if you are running r22, r134.

EDIT: I just took a look over there, thats a no go. already switched to different type of compressor in 1993. Try the different manufacturers websites directly, you may have better luck hunting down their specific part number

 

yeah that’s a good idea. I’m converting my system from r12 to r134 anyways so maybe that’s the move to make anyways. It would be a better pressure sensitivity to activate my secondary fan right?

I am installing a Sanden SD7H15 compressor anyways but I don’t think that changes much since all the fan does is turn the secondary fan on, it’s not a high pressure shut off switch like the one on the back of the R4 compressor. Right? Am I thinking crazy?

 

The only switch that changes pressures with R134a is the cycling switch on the accumulator which is actually adjustable. The compressor needs to bring the low side pressure lower with R134a to get as cold as R12 going down the highway. The fan cut-in and high pressure cut-out can work at the normal old pressures. I highly suggest a Red Ford 0.062" orifice tube especially with the SD7H15s reduced pumping capacity at idle and lower rpm compared to the R4.

 

Hey thanks for the response. So are you saying that I should stick with the original part number for the Fan cut-in switch from the R12 system to the now r134a system? Im losing the old high presuer cut out of course since i dont have the R-4 but I bought one that screws into the high pressure port with the R12 threads and i think i will just wire it to the old high pressure cut-out wires. Also i got that exact orifice tube from UAC for the crown vic.

 

The fan switch does not care if it is R12 or R134a, it is going to activate at the same pressure. R134a will build more pressure, more quickly, thus enabling the fan more quickly. I have used retrofit high pressure switches that thread into the high pressure fitting after removing the core and have a R134a fitting for the gauge set as well as the switch built in. To simplify the wiring lengths, can simply add the cutout in series with the cycling switch at the firewall and tie the old switch wires together at the compressor. Really up to you how you want to wire it in. The Sanden 4261 SD7H15 I am using for the 87 G20 has a GM switch port in the head and uses a high pressure cutout switch for a 1997 truck/van/suv. That was a compressor intended to replace the failure prone HT6s in that application though. The 87 G20 did not have an OE high side cutout, I am wiring the switch into the clutch ground circuit at the compressor.

 

I got a similar cut out switch that wires into the high side port that will be wired. I will play with it, but it sounds like youre telling me i can wire that in series with the cycle switch in the accumulator. so that sill have the high pressure cut out figured out. But what about my secondary fam? when will that know to kick in, I still need a new new hvac pressure switch that also connects to the high pressure line, down low underneath the compressor. I still have no Idea what parts i can use as an alternative to that since i cant find any anywhere,

 

What is wrong with your stock fan switch? That being said Four Seasons list one available from Rockauto. Since you did not specify your year, chose a 1988 L98 Camaro. Turns the fan on at 250 psi and off at 185 psi. If you go to your local Oreilly, give them the number it will interchange as their Murray number since Murray is Four Seasons sourced for their AC parts.

 

I have a 1990 formula. I checked the Illustrated parts catalog and it shows that 88-90 V8's have the same A/c system. Then 91-91 it completely changed and is way way different. Well my 1990 formula looks nothing like what it says it would and look exactly like the 1991, down to the wiring harness, Riv-nut, and everything. Im not sure what that is about, My vin come back as coming with A/C so i dont see why anyone would completely change eveyr single part including the harness to 1 year difference. or maybe it came out of production like this, who knows? not me, cars older than i am . But all of the parts and numbers match the 91 and 92 A/C systems, including this Hvac switch. So Lets say its for a 1991 formula LB9/L98 Vin F. i checked the four seasons 36669 on napa's website, it says it does not fit and that is only fits the V6 engine. Does it make a difference? can i still use it? I will say it look a bit different as the one that i currently have, the dour seasons one is longer and has that weird bottle neck in the middle, im not sure if thats important. I will also say that the one i have is somehow super rusted on the outside and im pretty sure that it doesnt turn on my fan, I also believe it was causing a leak due to the corrosion.

Okay I ordered A four seasons # 36666 (not the 36669) hoping that will do the trick

 

Update:

the four seasons # 36666 does appear to be working. It’s doing its job, it fits fine with one exception. The little plastic fin on the side that is used to make sure the plug is aligned is at a different angle as the original one. So if you trim the plug or the switch a bit by cutting the plastic then it will plug in fine. So I guess problem solved.

 

Can I know how you found out that your original switch was bad?
I'm trying to figure out if mine is bad.
Mine seems to only turns on at around 260-270 PSI but it only keeps the fan on for like 10-15 seconds.

Also, thanks for the info, the four seasons 36666 is a much cheaper alternative.
I also like that the fact that it turns on the fan at 220 psi rather than the stock 233 psi.

 

hey! I don’t think mine was exactly bad. The main reason I wanted to change it was because I converted over to R134a and because it runs at a lower pressure, I thought I may as well switch to a lower pressure switch. I probably could have used it, but it was rusty and it seemed that it could have had a leak so I wanted to have something new to work and a replacement was $150 so I decided to go to the 3666. As long as you have the correct amount of Freon and your compressor is engaged and running, then it should absolutely be turning on your accessory fan. Like I said the four seasons 3666 or whatever I got works to this day. I almost daily my firebird and as long as the AC is on, that fan is on so the cheaper alternative is doing its job.
