Gap Between Fan & Radiator?

Just curious; I put a factory e-fan in my '83 from a '84 L-69.
Is there supposed to be a gap between the fan & radiator?
I don't really see any way to make it sit flush...

Re: Gap Between Fan & Radiator?

Post a pic.

The fan doesn't sit "against" the radiator, but it should only be an inch and a half or so away. It bolts to 2 pieces of plastic which in turn bolt to the same holes that a clutch fan shroud bolts to, which if they're right, then the fan has no choice.

I did the same thing to my '83 (replaced the mechanical fan) with a factory single fan from an '84-'86 using the upper and lower plastic mounts. Yes, there is a gap between the fan and radiator. I can take a picture if needed on my install.

if the fan sat against the radiator, it'd rub a hole through the very weak cooling tubes.
there has to be a gap between the hard plstic and radiator.
this is why those zip tie through the radiator clips that hold fans and transmission coolers on are just plain horrible ideas.

'Only reason I'm asking is because I sometimes see posts here saying that if there isn't a seal between the fan and radiator, that the air might be pulled around it rather than through it...

Re: Gap Between Fan & Radiator?

I would fit something like this so the fan is pulling air through the entire radiator core.Summit Racing SUM-381201 - Summit Racing™ Aluminum Fan Shrouds
123 Series Shroud; Single Fan; Uses 16
But what do I know? I like my belt-driven clutch fan. The only thing that stops it from working is a broken belt.
But I might add an electric pusher fan in front of the radiator (no more AC) to cool the engine after the car is turned off,
or if the belt were to break. It might also keep the engine cooler when idling on a hot day when the mechanical is turning slowly.

Could be referring to the radiator to body, not so much radiator to fan.
