Is the Thermostat Supposed to Have a Rubber O-Ring?

1991 305TBI

I bought a new Thermostat housing with gasket and a new thermostat.

The new Thermostat does not have a rubber o-ring around it. I watched some videos and it looks like some thermostats have the rubber o-ring and some don't.

Is the TBI thermostat supposed to have an oring around it, or does it just sit right in the groove without one?

Most don't have one, including the original.
