Accel Gen 7 DFI Question

I cannot find any documentation on the Accel site or any other site can confirm that the Gen 7 KIT will accept a knock sensor with out some type of additional harness.

Does anybody know if the boxed kit that comes with the ECM, Harness, MAP, MAT and CTS has the provision for a knock sensor?

Thanks,

Mark

Gen 7

I am going to order a Gen 7 in the morning. I am under the impression that it should hookup the GM knock sensor without any additional kits. Now I will confirm that in my order. What are you building? I am convinced that using one of these computers will be easier to tune my car.

I just ordered the Gen 7, Dual Sync distributor and a set of 31 lb injectors and found out the Gen 7 will accept the factory knock sensor but you have to buy an additional harness and module. The tech guy I spoke to said the knock sensor is not necessary due to the tunabilty of the unit. This really concerns me because I swapped to the Gen 7 to combat a pinging problem.
So there is the answer, I will give it a try but I feel like I will be getting the additional parts pretty soon.

This setup is going in a Jeep with 1-ton running gear, the engine is a SBC 415 with Brodix Track 1 heads, the compression is right at 10.45:1 and a hydraulic roller cam with 277/286 @.006 and .535"/.550" lift hoping to make around 475 hp we will see, this should be fun to tune.

Good luck Frank !

Accel or FAST

Here is what happened, I was going to buy the Accel then the guy started telling me about the ease of tuning the FAST system. He goes on to tell me that the people who created the Accel unit moved to FAST. So I called FAST and it was all true. As a result I am now waiting for my FAST unit. I just pulled apart my exiting harness to salvage the wires and hookups that I need. I am going to by my MAP sensor in the morning. Can't wait to get my 400 running.

IMO ALL aftermarket efi systems take a certain level of skill and experience. If you think any will be a walk in the park and will take a half hour to tune you are in for a learning curve (unless you have done it several times, then it is much easier).

When he said you don't need a knock sensor, he meant you are supposed to tune it so it doesn't knock. You don't use a knock sensor to compensate for a timing map that is too agressive.

All it takes are a few changes and you should have a safe curve.

You need a knock sensor AND knock module. If you have those most aftermarket ECU's should plug in as long as they have the wire and connector.

Frank,

Where are you getting your FAST unit from? Do they have a new system out?

You should know that the ACCEL system which the FAST people always talk about is the ACCEL 6.0 system, not the current Gen 7.0 system. FAST is still paying royalties to ACCEL for each system sold because the guys that came from ACCEL/DFI (Lance Ward and John Meaney) stole the Gen 6.0 design when they left/got fired. That is where the FAST unit came from, unless they have something else very new on the market.

If they do have a new system, I'd really like to check it out. Let me know where you are getting yours from.

Steve

Ok- I understand the Gen 6 is done and no longer available. It is all Gen 7. I understand there are issues with Gen 7 and Accel is working out the bugs. Also does the Gen 7 offer wideband O2. The FAST unit is the Band to Bank for HEI-Wide Band Oxygen Sensing Option Included the system number is 30-111010. ttp://www.fuelairspark.com/
3 shops that deal Accel and FAST appear to be saying the same thing and lean toward the FAST. Is this fast unit a Gen 6 or is it an upgrade.

The current FAST unit is a modernized version of the ACCEL 6.0 box. Any shop that can tune the 6.0 box can probably also tune the FAST system.

The Gen 7.0 is a totally different class of controller. More refined, easier to tune, better interface... The box can made to be Batch, Sequential, TBI, or others by changing configuration options in the CalMap software, not by paying for a factory upgrade.

Tuning the Gen 7.0 is different from the 6.0 and FAST systems, but in the long run, the engine is going to run harder, with much better driveability. I can understand the shops recommending the FAST box, they haven't learned the new DFI yet, and are comfortable with what they know.

The only real bug that I heard about was with the wideband O2 sensor. Originally, it was only intended for non-boosted applications. However, they fixed the electronics in the sensor, and now it works just fine with boosted and N/A applications. The Gen 7.0 system rocks.

Check out these sites for a little testimonial... Not my sites, but I helped them a bit.

Also, look at the pictures in this article about GM Racing's ecotech program closely... There is a ACCEL/DFI Gen 7.0 controller hanging on the wall in the dyno cell. The GM program uses DFI systems on their cavalier/sunfire drag cars. I helped them a little too.
