383 TPI Question

Hey guys, I posted this on the tech board and got a reply to post it on this board hoping one of you could help. I just found out my engine is a 383. Ever since I bought the car it's had some problems, finally the cam took a dump, the previous owner torked the rockers down so far that the studs started to pull out of the head and he screwed up the cam. As I was tearing into it I noticed it's a 383. I'm changing the cam for a Compu Cam from Crane 2040 series, currently getting the heads redone, the guides were totally shot. The heads are 74cc chambers with 1.94 in. intake valves. The pistons look like they have a .100 in. dome, but after looking in manufacturer books and just comparing the piston, it shows I should be running 10.2:1 compression. Now when I had the car running, it ran like a champ, then all of a sudden it started backfiring through the intake. I also bought a fuel pressure regulator. My question is, could I get away with an 1988 350 automatic 3.27 gear EPROM? I think the injectors are 22# per hour, but not positive because they were in the car when I bought it. If I can't use the EPROM, could I atleast start it to break the cam in? I've been reading a ton of different posts and getting a lot of different opinions. I don't want to upgrade to a Holley or Accel system because I'm short on cash. Thanks in advance

If the injectors on the engine match the injectors in the PROM, you should be OK. If the injectors are smaller on the engine than in the PROM, you'll run lean until closed loop and then hopefully the BLM will adjust. If the injectors are bigger on the engine than in the PROM, you'll run rich until CL. This is of course assuming that the engine is very well sealed with no vacuum leaks or exhaust leaks in which case it wouldn't matter what you have for injectors or PROM.

Thanks for the reply, so I can run it without a custom chip to atleast break the cam in. Now if I'm looking for optimum performance, then I should buy a chip. I thought that was the case but just wanted to hear someone else thinking the same thing. Thanks again!
