how to install new chip??

A buddy of mine just gave me a new computer chip for my car. I know how to physically install it, but how do i "teach" the car to read the new chip and not run in open loop. I've heard alot of different methods, but i want to know which one is right. any hep would be greeeaatly appreciated. Thanx.

The "learning" ability of the eproms is really quite limited and of limited use. First, it does NOTHING for spark, only fuel trim get updated and ONLY when in closed loop.

The biggest problem is that in WOT (where the "learnt" fuel trim would have its biggest usefulness), the eprom NEVER get a chance to "learn" in closed loop. The ECM only learns in closed loop. When you are in WOT - you aren't in closed loop and it can't learn.

Bottom line, just drive around. If the eprom is "off" then no amount of learning will help.

Excuse my dumb questions, but i know absolutely nothing, i mean NOTHING about these computers. I know they plug in and are somehow supposed to make the car perform better. I asked this question because the chip ran like crap in my car, which by the way is identical to my friends car in which the chip ran flawlessly. I asked the question becaues i'm under the impression that i had done something wrong. I installed the chip with the battery disconnected and after i did it, the car had terrible power and it backfired under acceleration and "missed" in higher RPM's. I bumped the timing up a little bit hoping to solve the problem, but it didn't help.

What you're saying is that the EPROM only "learns" while it's in closed loop? So theoretically, i should just drive around until the car goes into closed loop and it will then read the chip and "learn" to run right? Does this mean that while it's in open loop until the car heats up that i will have to deal with the crappy performance until the EPROM learns? Please correct anything and clarify ALL!!! Thanx alot.
