Can I upgrade to the 1986 and up better ECM with no problems

Hey

I was wondering if I would be able to hook up a 1986 and up ECM. As u all know the ECM in 1985 was not great, its slow. Well would I be able to plug in a 1986 and up ECM with no problems. What would I have to do if the ECM change cause problems.

Thanks

I'm looking to do the same. Some re pinning of the connectors is required along with adding 2 MAF relays. This site explains it:
