Lots of power with stock ECM???

first of all, let me just say that I only know the basics of the stock ECU. My car is currently carb'd and N/A, but I am building a procharged 396 small block for my next engine (whenever this one goes...*** please, no time soon). The main reason I went carb'd and may have to stay that way was $$$. I was just reading another post and a guy said he was going to use his stock ECU with an FMU and hopefully achieve the same results as a DFI setup. Will the stock ECU work with say 700+hp and 15+lbs of boost? If I can use a stock ECU, then I am going to have to seriously reconsider. Also, what would the limits of cam duration be if I were to use it? Forgive me if this question has been asked several times, but I had specifics I wanted to know.

Your best bet, maybe your only bet as none of the other ecm's handle boost, is to use the syty ecm. Go to the syty.org ? board and check it out. I believe there are several guys over there using very big inj's on the factory ecm, maybe enough to support 700hp. Notice I say maybe. Do some research over there but I think you're seriously taxing the limits of a factory ecm. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of the factory ecm's but there is a time and a place for the aftermarket stuff and it sounds like you may need it. Besides, a DFI will only cost about a tenth of what you're spending on that engine. Also, maybe the LT1 ecm might work as some of those guys have been known to make that kind of power. It'll take adapting an opti sensor to a conventional SBC but that's been done before too.
