Depends on your needs.
I'am satisfied with my AutoXRay:
www.autoxray.com

But i think the best solution to diagnose your car is
making your own ALDL-cable and connect it to a Laptop.

I'm happy with Ease but to use it you must have a laptop with a serial port.

A regular computer is fine in your garage but at some point in time you are going to want live road data.

Is there a way I can pinpoint my problem I have in my car.. with a pc..?

I have a 1986firebird 2.8L v6 and I am getting HORRIBLE gas mileage! 12MPG! I did a tuneup too, plugs, wires, cap rotor. replaced maf, alternator, and a new egr valve.

Could be the O2, or need new injectors. The scannig software would tell you that. I would guess that unless you intend to use it severals times it might be better to let someone else do it. $300+ for scanning software is hard to justify for one shot.

You can get the fault codes out of the computer with a paper clip in the correct terminals of the computer connector block. Check the manual.

yes, i know how to pull codes. i'm just looking for a good scanner. i know the gm tech 1, you have to have a "E" pin adapter for 86-88 305/350 tpi. is it like that with the aftermarket scanners? as i have a 86 305tpi. thanks for your replies. tom
