where do I get equipment to burn my chip?

I have no idea how to do this but I am very interested. Where do I get the equipment to burn my own chip. Can I just get a cable and plug it into the ALDL port with a laptop and get a program like tunercat to adjust things? Or do I have to open up the ecm and take out the chip and put it into some kind of machine and hook it to a computer. What do I do?

i was having alot of trouble too. here is what i came up with: I bought a laptop from ebay ($100) that runs in dos 6.2. I then got craig moates software (winzip 852) and downloaded it onto the laptop. Next, i purchased the akm cable to hook to the cars ALDL connector and the laptop. that is what you use to datalog what the car is actualy doing with the chip that is in there. that is all I use the laptop for. I then save the datalog onto a floppy disk and upload that on my home PC to analyze the info using a spreadsheet from openoffice.org. This is how far ive gotten so far. next, Im gonna use the xtronics pocket programmer to download the info from my stock prom and load into turner cat. next, i will use turner cat to make changes to the paramaters on the stock chip and modify the bin to try and make it better. (this is the part that takes alot of learning and trying to get good at.) then i will use the xtronics pocket programmer to burn the new bin onto a prom(chip) and install that in the car. Finally, i will use the laptop again to record the data and see what improvements ive made and what still needs to be done. this part will be done many times over before it is close to perfect. Now im no expert on this, but this is what ive picked up so far on my journey. use this in anyway you can. the tech article in thirdgen.org are very infomative when you to understanding them. good luck hope this helps
