ECM questions

alright, alot of these questions are prolly gonna be stupid as hell lol..but i'll try em out. first off, i have an 84 z-28 5 speed. i am wanting to be putting a TPI system on it here soon...but i heard that i'd need a ECM from a manual car for it all to work? and then 2nd, i will be putting a t56 into it eventally after i get all the engine work done on it...and wasn't sure if i even found a ECM for a manual, if it'd be just for the t5, or if it'd work for all manual trannies or not. Anyways, any help would be appriated

There are two main types of TPI setups. The first would be the 86-89 MAF setup with a 165 ECM. The second would be the 90-92 Speed Density setup with the 730 ECM. Either would swap in, but depending on which type you choose you have to get the right wiring harness. As for the tranny issue, the 89 and older cars were cable driven speedo (cable to the back of the guage cluster). The 90-92 cars were VSS, so the guage cluster was electronic and the tranny output a VSS signal. The T56 you plan to swap in will output a VSS signal. You'll need a converter box from Dakota Digital to make it work with a 90-92 cluster. If you decide to go with a non VSS TPI setup (aka MAF TPI), I think you can even get a converter that will work with a VSS T56.

Ok question for you. I have a 1991 Z and think the guy who i bought it from changed it cause the speedo cable has the plastic gears in the tranny instead of the metal one. Now if he changed this to mechanical speedo do I still have the VSS?

The memcal needs to be for a 5 speed. The ecm would be the same between the 5 speed and the auto.
