Dumb ECM question

Seems dumb to me anyways...... but here we go

How hot does your ECM get? My 730 ECM gets quite warm while I'm out datalogging. I have it sitting on the passenger floor board, but the carpet is still cool. So I don't think it is the exhaust, even though my cat is gutted. Even with the AC blowing on it its still decently warm to the touch.

Any suggestions? If I had an IR temp gun I'd use it to get an exact reading on it. Maybe I can steal on of those forehead therometers hospitals use to figure it out.

Running on the bench at heavy loads, they can get up to 120-130dF. I never got too obessed with the stockers and temps.. When you start changing injector drivers, and changing the guts around, then you can start having problems.

FWIW, the first thing to go, seems to be WOT injector firing when they get too hot, and once they get too hot, they never recover. I've only been able to do that with using the wrong injectors with a stock ecm.

Good question. However, this is probably better on the DFI/ECM Board (RBob needs the business).

Well after driving around normally, the ECM has a temp of 98*F

If I beat on it some, the temp goes to 102*F, I only drove like an idot for about 5 mins or less.

Is this acceptable?

No beating on the ecm is not acceptable.
Unless it was self defense?.
And in that case you need to fill out a police report.

The temps you've report don't exceed what I've noticed as normal.

Well after beating on the car some today, I got the ecm temp to 104*F. Seems to run warmer when I have the AC on as well.....

Just an interesting note

thanks

I don't really consider it an issue. The top cover of the ECM is the heat sink. Inside there is an aluminum bar or plate that has the injector drivers, voltage regulators, misc drivers and on some ECMs the quad drivers attached to. The ECM cover is attached to this bar to transfer the heat out of the ECM.

The TBI ECMs run even hotter then the above mentioned port ECM. This is because of the PnH driver for the low impedence injectors. A lot of heat is generated as the injector driver backs off the current and starts to drop a lot of voltage across the transistor.

RBob.
