Chips & timing.

When changing computer chips to a performance one, do you have to adjust the timing? i've got one from superchips(it was in the car when i got it), some mechanics took it out & said it did nothing. i don't believe them, and i want to slap them. So..

i put it back in yesterday, the car idled liekd it had a radical cam in it, & died. smoked like crazy too. i was like.. omgosh, you llama!.. so, i took it out tried it every way it could go(chip & chip board).. so.. i was like, ok, screw it, plopped back in the OEM. Now.. my friends and i adjusted the timing awhile back, and it wasy WAY WAY WAY off, so i'm wondering if the chip had to have the car set to a different timing... if so.. how can i find out what timeing mark?

Thanks.

Well, not too many folks here on the DFI & ECM board or the DIY PROM board recommend the aftermarket chips.

As for your engine problems, start out with the stock MEMCAL/PROM (which engine & year is this for?). Set the timing to the stock value. Don't forget to disconnect the EST connector while doing this.

Once this is done turn off the ignition for at least 10 seconds, then observe the SES light as you key on. The SES light should come on, blink off for about 1/2 second, then come on solid. Now crank and start the engine. The SES light should be off.

If not then something is wrong. If it doesn't come on at all, the bulb can be missing or burned out.

If the bulb stays on solid (no blink out) or flashes rapidly then there is an ECM or MEMCAL problem.

As far as needing to change the timing when using the aftermarket chip your best bet is to contact the manufacturer.

OK. The short of it is: put the stock chip in and set the timing to stock (6 deg BTDC w/EST disconnected).

If it runs OK then you are good to go. . .

BTDC=Before top dead center, which will be to the left of the '0' degree mark on the timing pointer. Left side is before the #1 pistion reaches the top of its travel, to the right will be the time that the piston is going downward past the top of its travel on the 'power' stroke. The est is teh electronic spark timing. There is a bypass connector on teh firewall above the heater box. Its in the bundle of wires there. Make sure you disconnect it before you set the timing. If you dont the ecm will add in timing on top of the base advance and the timing will be all kinds of off.
