Problem reading Error Codes

Some previous owner removed the EGR, catalytic converter and air conditioning stuff from my car, an 82 Firebird with a 2.8L engine. The bulb was also removed from the SES light. I reinstalled the bulb and it stays on constantly. I went to check the error code from my ECM last night. I shorted out pins A and B on the ALDL connector but the light just stayed on, there was no flashing. I have been doing a complete restoration of the car over the past year and a half and haven't done much milage on it. The car starts and idles fine. I took it out for two 30 mile runs in the last two weeks and it ran fine. I don't know why the SES light stays on. Is there some way to reset it? If there was a problem with the ECM surely the car won't run properly?

Any help appreciated,

The GM EFIs will drive fairly well in limp home mode.

You need to start at square one, and figure out what's wrong.

Yes, to figure out what's wrong is what I want to do. My car uses a 2 Barrel carb. Is there electrical diagrams on this site for the ECM. I looked in the technical data section but didn't see anything close. When I shorted out pins A and B basically nothing happens (The SES light just stays on). On my ALDL connector there are connections to A,B,C,D and F. The rest are blank. On B I am reading 1.23V should I be reading 5V?

If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it as I haven't a clue about this thing,
Thanks.
