idle diagnostic mode...?

I've noticed that lots of cars have idle problems.
Is there such a thing as an idle diagnostic mode, perhaps
the dealers , or aftermarket gizmoes, have it.
It seems to me that being able to, 'set to fixed IAC',
set fuel pulsewidth, set to fixed spark advance,
would be useful to track down a problem(s).

Many P4 ECMs (later TPI stuff) have mode 4 commands available via the ALDL stream. These commands allow the user to control many of the items you mentioned within the ECM. Need a scan tool that can do this such as the TechII.
