code 54 help needed
getting a code 54 my fuel gauge no longer works. would be gauge no longer working set this code? or is it something else setting this code off? i just bought a whole new sending unit assy.. my exhaust is about 4 months old (came on the car when i got it) i'm thinking if i have to dismantle it to take the tank out to put in the sender i minus well do 2 things while at it. 1 get a hp fuel pump as i'm planning on future upgrades and 2 get a good cat back exhaust seing i have to pull it half of it down anyway. so if it's just the sending unit causing the 54 i can live with it for a few.

Code 54 on the '86 MAF f-body's is a fuel pump relay failure. This just means that the relay that drives the fuel pump is not providing the proper voltage. The relay is probably failing.

strange as it is, i have had a constant service engine light. the car has been hard starting also. anyway, i pulled the codes and now no service engine light and get this, it's starting great. guess the relay is a good call. probably on the fritz. i'm going to replace it, chances are next time i won't get lucky and have a lazy one, next time it won't work at all
thanks for your input. i just got the car last week. it had a rough idle so i gave it a compl. tune. took the dist. cap off and the rotor FELL OFF! must have had the luck of the irish . drove the car for about 15 miles and parked it in my garage. one more mile/minute and it would have died! the fuel gauge doesn't work and a complete sending unit came with it but i'm going to check it out. might not even be a faulty relay. thanks
