ECM with custom chip vs. aftermarket DFI stand-alone engine management system (????)
I have a question about stock ECM’s with a custom chip and an aftermarket engine management systems (for example Accel DFI stand-alone engine management system). I am wondering if you can program a chip for your stock ECM that would give you performance comparable to the Accel engine management system. I read this quote from Hot Rod Magazine, “Past experience told us that testing TPI intake systems with the inability to accurately tune the factory management system limited power potential of some systems”. Ten Times the torque; The Ultimate TPI Shootout, this was the article that Hot Rod Magazine did in February 2005. Anyways back to my question I wanted to know if you can sufficiently tune the stock ECM with a custom chip and get good performance. The reason that I ask is because the Accel DFI stand-alone engine management system is about $1000!! I just wanted to see if it would be worth spending that much money or if a custom chip for the stock ECM would be sufficient. And this is for heavily modified motors. Well let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

Would 10's on a N/A motor in a 3rd gen TA running a 3rd gen ECM answer your question?

Yes, the stock GM ECMs are very capable.

RBob,
Well you sure did answered my question thanks a million. Now for me to get a custom chip what do you suggest I do, go to a shop that has a dyno and get it tuned there or should I order a chip for example a leavel 4 or 5 prong from tpis? Thanks again for helping me out.
O I wanted to add nice car and nice run!!!!

Going to a shop with a dyno will aid in getting the WOT tuning done. No mail order chips, they just can't be done correctly.
Even with the dyno doing the WOT stuff, there still needs to be work done on driveability. This is where it is best for the owner to get involved.

Thanks for you input, I did a lot of reading last night in DIY PROM and it seems like a lot of people are afraid of doing there own chip modifications. To tell you the truth I would be afraid to mess up my motor, but at the same time I believe I would learn a lot by doing the set up my self. Right now I am in a little problem, I will probably be done with my motor in about a month and when I get the motor running I will be pretty short on cash and I’m going to need a chip. My motor is pretty modified and I am thinking that there isn’t enough time for me to modify my chip, do to lack of knowledge. I really don’t know what to do about this; I was thinking of buying a chip from someone that "says" that they can modify the chip to your application and using it for a couple of months as I learn how to do my own chip burning. Well let me know what you think about this.

Your cams not that big so it will run without hurting itself.
If you have a lap top and a LC-1 wb, you can datalog once you buy the appropriate hardware. Just need to have the cash for the extra stuff. For what you spend on the Custom chip you can pay for all of the stuff ex the WB & laptop.
Just keep reading the DIY board.
Couple of hrs per day minimum. Do lots of searching.
Beginners wonder in all the time asking simple stuff a search will answer. If you read up a little and then ask a more specific question you'll get better responses some times.
As a start, look at the S_AUJP V3 bin and thread.
And look at all of the 730 tuning stickies.
It will be overwhelming, but as long as your easy on the motor you won't hurt it. The WB will speed things up a lot in getting your AFR correct. In the end you will have better results.
