?'s about various standalone engine management systems
i currently have a turbo charged v6 car and im still running the stock ecm,(maf setup) and was going to do the conversion to the sd system and tune by burning chips.but with my plans for the future engine i belive my better choice would be to go with one of the standalone systems.
and i was wondering if u guys could share ur experiances with diff stand alone systems like the holley/megasquirt/aem etc.good points and bad points,or could make any recomendations on the better systems for turbocharged cars

I've been researching MegaSquirt for the past few months, and I've decided to use it on my turbo v6. Unfortunatly, it's not complete yet, so I don't have any actual 'field experience' with the system, but I think it's gonna work out pretty well.
The new MegaSquit II system could reproduce just about anything a 'factory' computer could. This includes fuel, spark, and with a little ingenuity, probably an H20 injection. The only issue is that it is experimental, meaning it will take some figuring out no matter what combo you are running. I've seen your threads on TGO before, and I don't think you'll have too much of a problem with that.
In the end, it has a forum all it's own, and as time goes by the knowledge base and support will grow. A few years ago, the original MS was very limited, but this product has really taken off and I expect it to continue.

I use a Megasquirt-II in my Chevelle. I got it running last summer ('05). I'm only controlling fuel with it right now, but I think it runs my 406 real nice. I didn't go any faster in the quarter vs. my carb, but the cold-start, idle, part-throttle, and throttle response were all tons better. Like pizza_guy said, there's definately a DIY aspect to it, and if you're cool with that, it's pretty easy to work with.
It's easy to tune in real time, it can take datalogs, there's a really good tool for viewing the datalogs, it has wideband control... But there is no out-of-the-box fan control. It also doesn't have knock-control. But look for something called KnockSenseMS or something like that. Someone makes an knock-sensor interface.
There's a ton of documentation, and you might have to do some learning in the process. Their forum is really helpful -- lots of smart people. I wouldn't say it's for everyone, but it works.

I am also researching the Megasquirt for use on my (soon to be) turbo 2.8. If I can eliminate the factory ECM completely, this will be the way to go. Otherwise I'm gonna run an SD ecm from a '90-'92 car and maybe go with the PROMInator to tune it. A guy from my local f-body club is getting me diagrams to build a harness for the MAF to SD swap that he runs on his '89 RS. And if all else fails, I will just go the easy route with an FMU.
BTW Dave, when are you gonna finish the How-to-turbo thread on the V6 board? I got some ?s for yeah!
