Uh Oh!!!

I made a big boo boo I think. I was working on my 92 a couple weeks ago I was pulling codes by using a paperclip in the A & B pin... I had a code 42 & 43 I got a new knock sensor got that code to clear. I was working on the other code I thought the problem to be a short in the Ignition circuit. So, I start to think that maby when I replaced Ignition Control Module in the distributor that I didnt put enough dielectric greas on there and it may have been causing a short??? Well I took it apart and put a little more grease on there, and put it all togeather then went home for the night. A week later I go back to the car (its stored at my parents house) connect the battery and fir her up, BIG misake. I forgot to take the paperclip out of the ALDL... . Now the car will not pull any codes at all and the ses light is always on, no code 12 nothing... did I trash my ecm???

by the way the car is a 92rs with an 86 305 TPI converted to speen density and uses all 92 electronics.

you shouldn't have hurt anything by doing that.

i don't remember what year they started, but you can leave A & B jumpered then start the motor & watch the speed the check engine light flashes to see if it goes into closed loop. i want to say that 1 flash per second is open loop, 2 flashes per second is closed, but i may have it backwards.

try to reseat the MEMCAL in the ECM & see if that helps.

That mode started in the early to mid 80s, it was even used on CCC Q-Jets, atleast on my 1988 Cadillac Fleetwood with the CCC Q-Jet 307 9 vin. It flashes once per second until it goes into closed loop. When it enters closed loop the on/off time varies depending on the A/F ratio. It works off of the Rich flag. When the engine is rich the light is on, if the engine is lean the light it off. A properly running engine should have about equal on/off time. More time on than off = rich. More time off than on = lean. It is an approximation at best.

Well I went to take a look at the car yesterday, the ses light is an all the time now no blinks nothing. It also will not pull any codes the light just stays steadily on. Also the car is running pretty rich, rich enough that if your standing behind it the fumes will make your eyes burn. I took the car on a quick test drive also when it was supposed to shift into 2nd (its a 700r4) it kinda just revved up a bit but then started to shudder like it was not geting enough of ethier fuel/air/spark???

Check the fuses and supply to the ECM. It'll behave just like that without juice.

Update...

Im sorry, I forgot to update this thread. Turned out the ECM was bad along with a couple other things. I dont think the ecm going out was my fault though, I think maybe the IAC motor windings where bad and from what Ive read could cause the ECM to take a vacation. Now if only I could get to the bottom of the surging problem that im having.
