sensor?
hey as Ive posted in a few other catagories i have a 89 irocz tpi camaro and it stalls when idle once the engine is warm... I have been looking for an explanation and would like any input please... the man who sold me the car believes a tune up will fix it but he isn't really sure, my grandfather who used to drag and works on my dads 69 ss camaro occasionally thinks a tune up and new spark plugs will do the job, and then i recently called my uncle who is a car freak and races, he says that he thinks it is something called a slow speed sensor? or something similar he said if it was the fuel injectors it wouldn't stall only when the engine is warm and idle it would just happen randomly at anytime... so what do you all think please i haven't gotten any feedback on any of my other post yet and am anxious to get my beauty on the road... thanks-

No such thing as a slow speed sensor. What rpm is it idling when first intial start? Your Iac could be going out or need adjusted to correct settings. Your Mass air flow sensor could be going out also. Those are two sensors that possibly make your car die. If it needs a tune up that would be an idea also. Read over the articles in the tech section, that should help with a lot of understanding untill you can get some more help to figure it out.

So your rpm is a 1,500 through 1,000? So you dont have any service engine light on? I would check your Iac it could be dirty, That is on the throttle body. Then with a scan tool they have some function on checking the readings on the mass air flow sensor, I dont remember what the numbers are though.

Re: sensor?
i was changing the spark plugs on my car when i found a little black wire just hanging off the bottom of the headers i was told by a friend it was prolly my O2 sensor so where do i plug it in?.. it sounds to me its causing my stalling problem but i dont see anywhere else to plug it... one wire drops down from along the firewall then meets with wire coming off sensor then both go towards front of car under headers and stops and hangs there...?

Re: sensor?
the 02 sensor unplugged wont cause much of a problem just a slightly off afr mixture once its warm. Factory these cars didnt have headers they had manifolds so if someone added headers and still has efi they need to drill a hole and install a oxygen sensor bung (where the 02 go's in to exhaust for its readings). If its not on your down pipe right after the exhaust manifold and you do in fact have headers down the road you'll have to look in to getting one installed
but it is most definetly not causing the stalling problem.
Your problem won't be fixed with a tuneup i can pretty much gurantee that whether it's fuel or ignition related i dont know though
.
i think checking the sensor voltage at your map would be a nice place toi start tho it should read between 1-5 volts higher the further the throttle opens) usually they max out in between 4.5-5v if you find any dead spots in that it needs replaced or if i maxes at like 2 volts or such replace it.

Re: sensor?
yea 2 owners ago the guy put hooker headers on it and there is an O2 sensor and from what people have been telling me it sounds like my stalling is from an air to gas problem and it only stalls once the car warms up about when the O2 sensor is supposed to kick in and keep the idle smooth... if you ask me it points to the O2 sensor but im not 100% sure hence why im askin for help though lol... thanks checking the volts on the O2 sensor was my next move one thing is for sure the guy who owned this car 2 owners ago was not an electrician the wiring job he did to this car is a headache in itself with the streetglow and sound system and who knows what else but mechanically the car is great its annoying but i really wanna figure out why its stalling in idle...
...also i dont have an MAP its an MAF i tried unplugging it and there was no super dramatic change when i unplugged the one plug it still stalled and when i unplugged the other one it actually rose in RPMs instead of dropping
