85 2.8l data logging

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has any experince trying to use winaldl or another software on a 85 2.8? It seems to capture a raw feed for me, but I can't get any sensor data/tables/etc to fill in, and am not sure how to convert the raw data to something useful. I posted this in the V6 board, but haven't gotten any replies so I thought I would try here.

Thanks

Yes, I have done it on my car...

The flashing number in winaldl, what is it for you?

You need the 10 k resistor to put the car in aldl mode. Otherwise it won't spit out any useful data.

I'm seeing 2's, 3's, and 4's if I recall. Everything basically scrolling across until right past IAC. I thought I tried using the 10k resistor setting on the cable as well and didn't have any luck with it.

Re: 85 2.8l data logging

Ok. What you are getting is noise. It should be consistant eights without the resistor and 24 ?? i think with the resistor in place. When you add the resistor, the numbers should jump up right away. In your case, you seem to have noise in the line. I had the same problem when I first made my cable without using a twisted pair line for the signal. Once I figured out that I needed the twisted pair, Everything worked properly.

LEt me know what the numbers are with the 10k setting. They will most likely be sporatic 16, 15, 18, etc which gets you nowhere fast.

Re: 85 2.8l data logging

Alright I will give that a shot tonight, and post the outcome of it.

I'm using this cable http://aldlcable.com/sc/details.asp?item=aldlobd1u I tried making about 2 of my own, and despite having done quite a bit of electronics I wasn't getting anywhere so I went ahead and bought that one. Which does seem to atleast get something feeding into it, although if its noise thats kinda disappointing.

I know the interface does work though, as I had a parts house hook a handheld scanner into it a week or two ago, and it was able to pull down codes.

I made the first one listed on the winaldl site and it wroked very well. i also added a 12v regulator to the power supply for stability's sake. it only cost about 5 dollars in parts.

Hmm, thats the same circut I built the first time, but I used solid strand wire, and could get nothing to flow across. Wonder if my wire choice, while free and sitting in the room, was a poor choice.

Re: 85 2.8l data logging

Okay so I figured out the problem, it was a combination of needing the 10k resistor set, and also needing my port speed at 4800, it was failing at 2400.

I did a 15 minute drive or so, and logged all the information, so now I guess its just a matter of figuring out what all of this means. Like for instance why would a O2 sensor toggle back and forth from lean and rich?

Regardless thanks for all the help

Re: 85 2.8l data logging

Is there by chance any guides, or information on what these different values and sensor voltages are suppose to be between? I've been searching the web and have come across some good info on INT, but not really much on reading the o2 readings.

Well, the O2 will wildly swing as the computer compensates and the engine load changes.

The DIY prom guys and the article section have a few useful topics you might want to check out. I never used it for much tuning, only to pull codes and verify that my sensors are all within spec.
