What chip is this?

Yesterday I was determined yet again to find the cause of my 85 Z28's rich burn problem and the ECM throwing code 44.

Since 44 is an oxygen sensor (lean) issue, I figured I would check and verify that the sensor was receiving power. I goofed the first time by disconnecting the harness at the oxygen sensor and grounding the voltmeter to the body oh the car. I would later discover that there was nothing wrong with the connection, but I wasn't aware that it had to be grounded to the engine block to get a reading (d'oh!).

So after this goof I assumed the sensor wasn't receiving power and decided to check the connection directly at the ECM. I pulled the ECM out of the dash and inserted a needle along side the pin of the O2 sensor wire to act as an extension for the voltmeter to read from. But while I had the computer out, I noticed a sticker on it that said, "JET PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS". So after I reconnected the battery, the terminal from the ECM ran fine from a warm start at 0.2 volts. I then discovered that the harness just before the O2 sensor read the same. So the sensor is hooked up properly. But now that I have discovered my ECM has an aftermarket chip in it, I have a strong feeling that could be the cause of my rich burn.

The only problem is I'm having trouble identifying just what chip this is. A quick look reveals JET only offers two chips for my car. Stage 1 and stage 2. But the part number on the chip I pulled from the ECM doesn't correspond with anything on their website (or anything on google for that matter!).

The stick on the bottom on the chip reads:

PART# HLK-S2
CARB EO# D-234-2

By the "S2" in the part number, I'm assuming this is a stage 2 chip. But I can't be entirely sure. Also, would removing it altogether and putting a stock chip back in possibly fix my rich burn and horrible gas mileage? Thanks in advance.

Re: What chip is this?

Heh. I think this little quote confirms my theory:

Authentic Jet Chip products lean out your vehicles stock air/fuel ratio. All vehicles come from the factory running very rich. This rich fuel environment is not optimal for your engine, power, or gas mileage. This product helps to create optimum air/fuel ratios to SAFELY INCREASE HP, TQ AND GAS MILEAGE.

Lean out my a$$. The ECM is now dumping more fuel than needed to compensate. Get to close to my car while It's diling and It's like your standing in the middle of a gas station...

Re: What chip is this?

According to CARB data base that chip does not really belong in your car. See PDF file for details.

You can burn a stock chip yourself - you'll have to get a low cost EEPROM burner, adaptor and flash chips. Check Moats website and EEPROM FAQ for details. For '89 IROC you can use AUJL, AUJM or APYU bins. By burning your own EPROMS - using flash chips allows easy changes. TunerPro allows easy changes.
