This Factory Computer adds 20HP? *LONG*

Here's the gist of it... a guy on another board claims that he can get 20hp more out of an engine by swapping to another "factory" 3rd Gen computer and calpac. This is in a race car context, so keep in mind that it's not the entire package as it came from the factory, but the rules do specifically say that computer tuning isn't allowed. CMC = NASA's CamaroMustangChallenge

...1991 Camaro Z28 from the factory with the 1LE option on the build sheet and original invoice. ... It has an L98 Camaro 350 instead of the 305 and makes 253 rwhp and 303 torque ... (an extra 20 hp is available with a different computer program)
there is a factory GM computer and calpac that will add 20 rwhp...and it is already in use in at least 2 CMC Camaros that I know of...fully legal under the rules...sometimes you just have to dig a bit into the parts catalogs and know who to talk to...there's a certain East Coast "factory" GM outfit that can supply you with hitherto unknown to most GM components that are perfectly legal under CMC rules
Check with those that have been racing GM products since the '80's you'll find some who are well aware of GM parts that work a bit better than their standard counterparts. GM is notorious for using outside contract racers for r&d. Think Jim Hall, think Roger Penske, and, of course, more recently as noted above Ed Hamburger and Joe Aquilante among others. GM has used feedback from various racing enterprises to incorporate changes in their production. The Corvette is a perfect example of this. And the Camaro/Firebird line has benefited from this for decades. Just for an example; the original Canadian Firehawk series was responsible for several innovations in Camaro performance including but not limited to the 1LE package. The SCCA Showroom Stock GT class is another example of GM's backdoor involvement. Did you know that if you had the right contact at GM a special "SSGT blueprinted" Camaro could be had delivered directly to your local GM dealer? And the computers in those cars meet the definitiion of CMC legal. Factory built and delivered, no questions about it. These 1991-92 cars were not 1LE's, just regular run-of-the-mill Z28s. Part of the package was a "strong" engine and the controlling computer. GM part #************* Legal for CMC? Under the rules I've read it is or if I'm wrong please show me where it fails to meet the factory produced and delivered test
Under the CMC rules these cars and components are legal. Limited production runs are defined as such. These are general production runs. You will find absolutely no difference in these general production components and any other general production components other than normal production line variations. They are not specified as limited production by the factory. Unless you have a GM engineering department to read the computer code and also provide you with the myriad programs used by GM for it to be checked against there is absolutely no way to determine what factory code is being used. And then you have the question of what is "limited"? Is it 2 units or is it 1000? Where does the break fall? In some years 1LE options numbered under 50. It's a slippery slope...it almost begs the "I can't define pornography but I know it when I see it" answer. Is it a limited production item? Yes. Is it a limited production item under the rules? No.
Anyone have any idea what he is talking about?

Sounds like hes trying to skirt some smog or racing rules but using a limited production computer for more power. As its illegal to program them for what ever reason, so you just take one directly from anoher car and plug it in. Which he says is sort legal but wonder on limited production.

Course I dunno how much the EMC IDs itself. sounds like it just a better factory chip / program but still its quote factory and not aftermarket or DIY reprogramed, when they say hey your stuff isn't right, he can say its this and this such car and it came like this factory or something Id guess.

Lots of assuming there, also skip read some.

Other than ECMs in cars that went directly to race teams (therefore "factory"), I could only see the B4C ECMs having a bit more "performance" tuning in them. I think they had no speed limiter whatsoever in them.

But other than those, I can't think of any other that might be "better"
